Back of motorbike taxi

Well I managed to sort out a early morning ride to the airport in Vientiene and was happy that all the paperwork went smoothly since my mind wasn't really working at that time of morning without caffeine.  I had reluctantly gone for the Lao airlines flight since it was the only available one day, but now that I've touched down in Hanoi I can reveal that they don't actually publish their safety record so many businesses won't fly with them

What a change of pace Hanoi is!!  It's best summed up by motorbikes and beeping horns, definitely the best way to see this place is to flag down a motorbike taxi (or more accurately, just don't say 'no thanks' to one of the many offers) and just ride.  Going through peak hour is crazy, and crossing the road is a leap of faith.  I can't wait for Ho Chi Minh city now since that at least triple the population.

As you can see from the photos no one wears a helmet even though it's technically illegal.  One guy was telling me that every now and then police will set up helmet checks, so all that happens is that an enterprising person will set up helmet rental a few hundred metres further up :)
