Yogyakarta
August 22, 2009
We arrived in Yogyakarta by train from Jakarta which was a pleasant 8 hour journey.
We stayed at the Hotel Karunia which was ok, but maybe needed a bit of a clean. However it was in an ideal location in the centre of town.
The touts in Yogyakarta are horrendous and it was a bit of a shock to the system having been in some very laid back countries so far on this trip. After a while we managed to ignore them which seems to be the best way.
During our stay we saw the Kraton where the sultan used to live as well as Taman Sari, the water castle. We also spent a bit of time walking around town and enjoyed some nice meals.
We also had a wonderful day trip to Borobodur (a Buddhist temple) and Prambanan (a Hindu temple). They were both very large and imposing complexes and both were very enjoyable to walk around.
