Day 16: Swakopmund - Walvis Bay - Solitaire - Sesriem Canyon (1)
On the way to Sesriem we stopped at Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay is the second-largest city in Namibia. The name Walvis Bay seems a bit weird really. Originally this was called Walvisbaai, which is Afrikaans for Whale Bay. For some reason the Namibian government figured it would make sense to translate the 'baai' part of the name into English, but leave 'Walvis' in Afrikaans.
I must say, all throughout Namibia the names of towns and streets has been fun, it's a mixture of German, Afrikaans, English and indigenous languages throughout the country.
There isn't a whole lot to see in Walvis Bay, but we stopped here to take a look at the white flamingoes which flock to the southern coastline. This is also the wealthiest part of the city, so it was interesting to see an almost European looking street with villas here in South Western Africa.
