Snorkeling Lamu
February 13, 1980
Scott and I rented a dhow with George and Ken and set out several miles to the north where there was said to be a bed of coral. We donned swim fins and snorkels while the black captain dropped anchor. He stood by with a crude harpoon at the ready, making us wonder if there were sharks in the area, but was actually surveying for fish. We dove. The underwater visibility was about twenty feet. Fifteen feet below high tide, we found only white formations of mushroom-shaped coral and some small black and white striped fish. It was somewhat of a disappointment after having snorkeled the colorful Great Barrier Reef in Australia four years earlier.
