Shifting North to Kenya
Scott and I stood in front of the Air Tanzania office at 5:00 a.m. eagerly awaiting the airport bus. At 7:30 we were told there was no bus. Two American girls who had recently arrived from Bombay joined us for the short taxi ride to the airport. We quickly got our boarding passes, cleared customs and immigration, and made the 7:55 flight. Our Boeing 737 made a brief stop in Mwanza on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest and the source of the Nile. We flew across its gray waters to land in Kigali, Rwanda.
The kind folks at Sabena Airlines promptly listed our names on the manifest for their next flight into Nairobi which was later in the afternoon. Scott and I took a strolled neighborhood streets. We browsed the open-air market which offered clothing, colorful fabrics, household supplies, tools, hardware, bicycles, shoes, fruits, and vegetables. Buzzing flies and rancid odors of raw fish and meat quelled our appetites.
