Athens
Fortunately, the Tel Aviv airport housed an all-night snack bar since we had more than ten hours to wait for our flight. The modern facility provided comfortable chairs but we spent most of the time sprawled on the floor playing rummy or Yahtzee and dozing off between frequent security checks. Finally, TWA Flight 881, a Boeing 707, departed. The green fields of Israel fell behind us as we climbed above the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
In two hours, we landed in Greece. It was a chilly 67° F when we rode a bus from the Athens airport to Constitution Square. At the American Express office we collected mail and a message from the seagoing student friends we had met back in Alexandria and Cairo. They would meet us at a sidewalk café there on the square tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. We hopped on the #2 trolley to the youth hostel, got settled in and did our laundry.
