Life in Thunder Bay- Give you all an Idea
December 4, 2004
This blog is about some of the things fun to do in Thunder Bay. More so about life in Thunder Bay, Ontario , Canada.
This following blog is about shags that people have in Thunder Bay. We call them Shags here, but in other places are either called Socials or Stags. Its when someone rents out a hall and for a couple who are engaged to get married. People go out and buy drinks and tickets for prizes as a fundraising effort for the new couple.
This blog is about a former co worker named Jodi, she was getting married that year to some rich dude. Anyhow her shag was arranged for beginning of December 2004. Most of everyone from work show up for the Shag in support of this couple.
Shag was at the Moose Hall in Thunder Bay off Fort William Rd, which is a large place with lots of good parking spaces.
The story begins, I showed up at another coworkers named Katie house for some drinks prior to the Shag. Most of the people I worked with showed up were there. From Cynthia, Brad, Tara, Monica, Paul, Chris, Jennifer, Adrianna, Chris and Dan. As you can see from the photos a few people thought we were in Hawaii at the time. It was a rocking time. Katie provided a great feast of snacks for everyone, from cracker jack to , cucumbers and lettuce. To dip and crackers and even pizza was offer. I had one beer as I have drink a bunch to the shag after this house party.
Afterward we make to the Shag, the Place is very packed with many many people. As well many other people from work as well. A few people from work who came were Mike, Vic, Brad, Bobby, Wade, Ken, Trevor, Mitch, Crystal, Mitch, Sandra and some other girl and a few others.
Its good night, many great tunes are played and many dance to them, the beer flowed very well and lots of laughs and cheers.
I did not win any prizes at this shag, but that is ok, as that's life, so we accept the way things are.
Afterwards the next day, many of us had to work that following morning. So only had 4 hour sleep prior to work. I did not drink much night before, but others were quite hung over. We got to briefing that morning our supervisior Trevor who was at the Shag night before was still drunk, as were a few others at work like Mike and Neil.
Trevor was giving out the days instructions and kept falling asleep at the time, in the corner of the room, Mike and Neil who were still drunk, were no hugging each other greatly in briefly, male bonding.
It was too funny that whole day, throughout rest of the day it seemed Miked and Neil had to hug each other whenever they walked by each other.

Good Budget Place
A nice local place to stay in the city. No Frills, but you are close to good places to eat like Boston Pizza and Safeway.
Rooms are average size and there is so much parking here. A good location on the main street in Thunder Bay.
For anyone looking or on a budget and just want a simple place to stay. This is the place you want to be.
I never have stay here myself, but others who have. Said it was a nice little place.
Come by and meet Bob himself.
Have and enjoy your stay

A Great Place to Stay in Thunder Bay
This is a review of hotels in Thunder Bay. I have not personally stayed here, but have been inside and know people who stay here. I figured I put some feedback on here in case you all are looking for a place to stay in Thunder Bay.
One of the best Airport hotels in the area.
Here is a quote from their website "As Northwestern Ontario’s largest premier full service hotel, the Valhalla Inn promises that your stay will be so much more than just comfortable, it will be an experience unlike any other. The entire staff share in this commitment.
With two in-house restaurants, a lounge, swimming pool, "club quality" recreation area, glorious courtyard, and complimentary High Speed Internet access in all guestrooms, the Valhalla Inn is truly the meaning of full service."
"Since 1981, the Valhalla Inn has set the standard in hotel, dining, business, convention, and banquet services in Thunder Bay. More than “just another hotel”, our warm and friendly hospitality in a striking Scandinavian-inspired environment ensures that every visit will be unique and enjoyable.
Guests also have easy access to any point in and around Thunder Bay, including the airport just two minutes away. Whether you are visiting on business, with the family, or on a romantic getaway, every traveller deserves the best – and in Thunder Bay, that’s the Valhalla Inn."
They have a good selection of restaurants from the Nordic Dining room to a Timbers Restaurant. So over all a large variety.
Overall, when in Thunder Bay. I would recommend this place to many people. Enjoy

An Amazing Place for mouth Watering Wings
Chicago Joe's is located right inside hotel Victoria Inn.
It is an amazing place to have wings or ribs on a Friday night and beer.
The Wings are really big and Beer is always fresh.
The waitresses are always good eye candy and serve their fellow man really well.
The service is totally amazing. We return so regularly because the food is fine and the wait staff are without a doubt the best in town.
I suspect the service is so good due to the fact that their policies are listed at each table. I would guess that each of the restaurants at this hotel chain would have similarly good service.
In addition to the meal above, we have enjoyed the wings, fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches and many of the appetizers at Chicago Joe's. I agree with another visitor that the wings at Chicago Joe's are my favourite in town as well.
I recommend this place for almost anyone. More for people who like Wings and Beer.

A good place for beer After Work
Madhouse Tavern is located on Bay St in Thunder Bay. A coworker of mine named Chris often hangs here on Wednesday nights wearing his pajama pants.
The parking here is a little tight but other wise ok. I always end up having to park on the street unless by some stroke of luck someone else is just leaving. A few times the service was terribly slow, which was awful as I only have an hour for my lunch break, but the last time they had the courtesy to tell us it would be a bit of a wait before we ordered and we were therefore able to find another restaurant with less of a wait so we wouldn't be late coming back to work. Most of the time I have gotten my food in a timely fashion, however. The food is usually really good, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal there and the prices are really fair. I would go again for sure. Just a piece of advise, if you're in a rush, let them know before hand and they're usually good about getting it out to you fast, or letting you know if they can't do it.
The servers are always friendly and you get what you want always.
Good place to hang out on the evenings with all your friends.

This Place would Be good for Name Mistake by the Lake
This hotel is a very old structure in Thunder Bay. Just off of Bay St. Its basically the Mistake by the Lake.
We entered this place one day and hung out in the bar area on a Friday night.
It was very old and dirty. Only one person was in the place at this time. It was consider busy.
The beer only available was Crystal which was warm. The chairs were broken and smelly. The Arcade game in the corner said FIFI 1991! Abit out dated.
The floor need to be rewaxed. In fact best thing to do would be to just burn it. That would solve all problems.
Overall I don't recommend this place.
Only recommend for people who wear Pajama pants in public and like to get up in the morning drinking Robins Donuts Coffee from the night before.

A place to Watch the Game and eat Wings
On Deck is a sports Bar in Thunder Bay. Been around for many many years. Good place to go for wings and beer and watch a good sports game.
Its a good place to go, but the front door needs to be fixed. Has not been fixed in over 10 years. So bring a jacket if you go in the wintertime.
Food here is good. Best thing to get is Wings and Nachos.
However a Few years back they messed up my order of nachos and got me the wrong beer. So I never went back.
As well we ordered wings one day, the owner put the basket of wings onto a scale and weighed the wings. He then was putting several wings into the garbage as we apparently we were going to get too many, go figure.
Overall not a bad place to go, just be careful and park in the busy street. As Jack might come to you car.
There used to be this drunk guy named Chuck who used to dance here awhile ago.
He is a permanent fixture there.
Have fun and let me know your experience.

Good Place to go for a Mountain Burger
A good place if your into really really big burgers.
We were very hungry one evening so we tried out Montanas.
The Layout is very nice, like an old country western barn. We were seated and greeted by the wonderful young waitress named Shelly.
We ordered our food and drinks very quickly.
At this time our server was laughing and smiling quite well, to which you could see all of her white chiclets in her mouth.
I ordered the Mountain Burger, and fries and a good size beer.
The burger was really big and huge. I could hold it with my hands so I had to eat it the Jerry Seinfeld way, by using a fork and knife. No complaints here.
The burger went down like a big mountain. My beer was still nice and cold when drinking and it washed my meal down well.
The server got a very nice tip to which she deserved it well. Perhaps she might be able to buy a newspaper with that change.
I recommend this place if your into really really big burgers when your in Thunder Bay.
Let me know and I will come join you for a burger when your in town.
Cheers see you soon.

A Place to Go Dance up a Storm on the Weekends
Scuttlebutts is one of the only nightclubs you can find in Thunder Bay. Well its more of a bar with a dance floor.
Saturday is the big night here. The cover charge here is usually 3 bucks after 10pm. There is always a decent band playing and wipping up a storm all weekend.
The girls are always dressed for success and quite plentyful. There is lots to be seen at any time.
The drinks here range from many variety of beers, and mixed drinks.
There is plenty of parking outside and taxi's available. Please don't drink and drive. Unless your name is Glen.
There is no dress code, so you can show up in sweat pants and pajama pants, but please be more classy then that.
Remember this is Ontario, so no smoking inside please, there is an outdoor smoking spot.

A Low Key way to Spend your Evening in Thunder Bay
Brown St. Station is considered a nightclub.
Located in the Westfort side of Thunder Bay.
Has a good amount of parking all over the area at any time.
Good place to come for cheap drinks and cheap music.
Last time we were there, we ventured to the VIP bar downstairs. Here the entire time we were here, music by Phil Collins was played the whole time. So this scared us away from this place.
Anyhow, it is recommend for people who like low ke places to go out at night. The drinks are cheap and so are the people. Enjoy your stay.

A Cheap Hotel in Bad Area
Well all I figure I do this review. In case you head to my city. This is for your own safety.
The West Hotel is in a bad area of the city. So stay away. It has been in the news many times for many crimes here in last many years.
It is an old historic building but has been left unkept and is not worth visiting.
It is very cheap place to stay and has some bars nearby as well.
I do no recommend anyone to stay or even be in this area when in town just a bad area.
So wish you well on your trip to Thunder Bay.

A Nice Place to Chill Out
Waverley Park is a public park located in the north end of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It is the second oldest municipal park in Ontario. The park forms the centre of the Waverley Park Heritage Conservation District, a collection of historical homes, churches, schools, and other buildings at the centre of Port Arthur.
The property was surveyed and set aside as parkland by the Crown Lands Department, in the original ordnance survey of the Prince Arthur's Landing town plot in 1871. It was given to the city of Port Arthur in 1907 on the condition that is "not be alienated or leased and that no buildings be erected on it except municipal buildings".
The most notable features of Waverley Park include its giant cottonwood trees, which stand as much as 40 m above the park. In recent years, many have been removed due to advanced age and disease. Other notable features include a fountain, cenotaph, and bandshell. The park is between Waverley Street and Red River Road in Thunder Bay, and is located between two historic schools — Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and Port Arthur Central School — the latter is now a theatre.
The centrepiece of Waverley Park is the Hogarth Fountain. A gift from the wife of a prominent soldier and politician, Major General Donald McDonald Hogarth (1879-1950), the fountain originated from the Luton Hoo Mansion, in the town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England. Its ten tonne Portland stone foundation dates back to 1790. The fountain was purchased and shipped to Waverly Park in 1964, and dedicated on 5 June 1965.
The fountain features nude children in a renaissance style, along with bundles of wheat and garlands of flowers. The water pours from the mouths of lions mounted above leaves which deflect the water away from the center and out into the pool.

A good Place to See History
The Thunder Bay Historical Museum is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is operated by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society, incorporated in 1972 as the successor to the Thunder Bay Historical Society.
The Museum is affiliated with the Canadian Museums Association, the Canadian Heritage Information Network, and Virtual Museum of Canada.
The Thunder Bay Historical Society was founded October 2, 1908 at the instance of Barlow Cumberland, president of the Ontario Historical Society. Peter McKellar served as president of the Thunder Bay Historical Society from 1908 to 1923.
Since 1994 the museum has been housed in the former Fort William police station and court house near Thunder Bay City Hall. The three storey building, designed by architect Robert Mason, was erected in 1910 and is an example of Classical Revival architecture, with its two large Corinthian columns and pilasters. Fund raising is under way to restore the cornice and other missing architectural elements. The interior of the building has been treated with complete renovations since 1994, including an overhaul of its HVAC system and the addition of a wheelchair ramp. An annex was enlarged and converted to a storage area for the collection. Recently a visible storage gallery was built in front of the annex to display vehicles and other large items in the museum's collection.
The first floor gallery features permanent exhibits on various aspects of local history. The second floor gallery is known as the James Murphy Room and is dedicated to meetings and programming, such as workshops for children. The third floor gallery features the McKellar Games Room and special exhibits.
The museum collects objects of regional interest, such as dolls, pictures and furniture, and its collection includes a firetruck. The archives has 130 metres of linear records, 1900 maps and plans, 150,000 photographic images and a 2200 volume library.

In an effort to decrease the facility's burden on taxpayers, the Community Auditorium issued an expression of interest for an organization or individual to become a naming sponsor in February 2008.[1] Two potential sponsors — Shaw Communications and TBayTel — initially expressed interest,[3] but did not follow up on it by the March 27, 2008 deadline, and the name will remain the same.[4] The facility receives $475,000 annually from the City of Thunder Bay.
Overall, a very comfortable place to sit for a nice show.

The Best Hockey and Concerts in Town are Here
The Fort William Gardens is a 4,690-capacity (3,371-seat) multi-purpose arena in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It was built in 1952.
Previous tenants include the Thunder Bay Flyers of the 'Junior A' United States Hockey League, the Thunder Bay Senators/Thunder Bay Thunder Cats of the Colonial Hockey League (which became the United Hockey League), and the Thunder Bay Twins (senior men's hockey). Since 2001 the Gardens has been home to the Lakehead Thunderwolves men's university hockey program and has also played host to a Superior International Junior Hockey League team. The Thunder Bay Bulldogs called the Gardens home from 2001 to 2005, then were replaced by the Fort William North Stars.
The Gardens has a long history of hockey, however, the isolation of Thunder Bay and travel costs have prevented the Gardens from retaining most teams.[citation needed] It once hosted an NHL pre-season game between the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals, and two pre-season AHL games between the St. John's Maple Leafs and Manitoba Moose.
The Gardens played host to the 1967 Memorial Cup series in which the Toronto Marlboros defeated the Port Arthur Marrs for the national junior hockey championship.
The Gardens has also hosted several national curling championships:
* 1960 Tim Hortons Brier
* 1976 Women's Canadian Junior Curling Championships
* 1991 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships.
* 1996 Scott Tournament of Hearts
* 2002 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Open (Grand Slam Event)
The Gardens has also been home to some of the larger indoor concerts in Thunder Bay due to its capacity, including bands such as: Our Lady Peace, Nickelback, Pearl Jam, The Tragically Hip and R.E.M. It has also been used for Remembrance Day Ceremonies, festivals, circuses, and many other events.
The Fort William Gardens was completely renovated in 1995.

A Great Historical Building
The Finnish Labour Temple (also known as the Big Finn Hall or Finlandia Club) is a Finnish-Canadian cultural and community centre and a local landmark located at 314 Bay Street in the Finnish quarter in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Built in 1910, the Finnish Labour Temple was at one point one of the largest workers' halls in Canada in addition to being the centre of Finnish cultural and political life in Northwestern Ontario. Currently, the hall houses the historic Hoito Restaurant, the offices of the weekly Finnish-Canadian newspaper Canadan Sanomat, a museum, and features a large stage, dance floor, and hall as well as meeting rooms for various groups. The Finnish Labour Temple serves as one of the main locations of the Bay Street Film Festival.
The Finnish Labour Temple remains a highly visible local landmark and a symbol of the city. The Temple is the last remaining Finnish cultural centre in Canada and has been designated as a historical building.
The Hoito Restaurant remains a very popular eatery for locals and tourists, recently, there has been a marked increase in activity in the hall as a new generation of locals have stepped in to revive and breath new life into this historic building. This includes the Bay Street Film Festival, which features "films for the people" by screening local, national, and international films with social justice themes; a mojakka competition; an annual Finnish-Canadian art exhibit during the summer solstice; and an annual New Years masquerade party hosted by the Thunder Bay Indymedia collective. This, along with more traditional dances, celebrations, and events like St. Urho's Day make the Finnish Labour Temple one of the more distinctive locations in Thunder Bay.

A Good Cycling Club for racing in Thunder Bay
Here is a top notch cycling club in Thunder Bay. Offers good Mountain bike and road bike racing. AS well as group rides and lessons.
They have an official race team as well.
Here is the low down.bout the Black Sheep Cycling Club
In the beginning...
In 1998, mountain biking was already an internationally recognised sport in its own right. It was already an Olympic medal sport, had an international governing body (already for 8 years in the US!), dozens of national governing bodies all over the world, movies, magazines - heck, in 1998, Ned Overland's pro career had been over for two years! But Thunder Bay - with such great mountain bike terrain - still had no real mountain bike series of which to speak. Sure, there were races every once in a while, but there was little care put in to them, and the attendance reflected it. Mountain biking, for all its successes, was still considered a 'fringe' sport, the ugly cousin of road and touring.
The local high schools had a great mountain biking series - but it ended in early June. Some students would scratch their racing itch during the summer months by travelling south of the border to compete in NORBA and MNSCS races. They would return from these intensely fun, big, well run, well marked, competitive races with tons of prizes only to get depressed by Thunder Bay's meagre offerings.
So, in 1998, a group of high school-aged riders started a ten-race points series with local shop sponsorship, and called themselves 'The Black Sheep' after the 1970's TV show about WWII fighter pilots (and because it sounded cool). It was an instant success. How could it not be?
Fast forward ELEVEN years . . .
The Black Sheep has changed a lot over the years. Although cross country MTB events are still our most popular, we run a successful downhill race series, and for the first time in 2009, we have added two "Super-D" races to the event roster. Super D is a short, predominantly downhill (with some uphill sections) cross country race on slightly more challenging terrain than a typical XC race (but easier than DH terrain).
Black Sheep started as a racing club and racing still runs deep within our membership. Our 2009 schedule includes 15 series races and multiple Squadron events. However, it is important to note that our series races are also great fun. They provide members with opportunities to chat with other cycling enthusiasts, to grow as riders, and to enjoy post-race draw prizes. We also run a number of less competitive events and activities (including Sunday pre-rides/group rides) where the focus is having fun, encouraging fitness and development of cycling skills, and learning about our local trails. In 2009, one of our goals is to ensure that a Black Sheep member won't have to race to feel like a member of the Club and will receive great value for the membership fees they pay.
We've worked hard to make the 2009 season a good one and we hope you enjoy it. As always, we're open to advice and suggestions for improvement so if you have any, please direct them to the appropriate member of the Black Sheep Leadership Team below.
