A really advantageous thing
about the Dutch railways is that you can jump on and off the line so long as
you maintain your route (another helpful lesson from Rudolph). Thus we decided to hop off and explore Delft a bit during our
return from Kinderdijk.Kim has an eye
for pottery and so naturally she was interested in visiting this haven of
ceramic creations.Unfortunately we
didn’t get into town until evening, but were both instantly enchanted.
The parts of Delft we walked through were very sweet and
scenic.Some beautiful ancient
buildings and it was somewhat like walking through older sections of Amsterdam without so many
bikes, lol. There were a lot of shops and
Kim spotted some Delft
pottery through a window across a canal just before five o’clock. We dashed around the corner to find a bridge
and just barely managed to scramble inside as the proprietors were closing the
door.Several minutes and several pieces
of pottery later, Kim was pleased to have obtained some of this striking
art…and hopefully the owners were pleased with a final sale before calling it a
night.
Right next door was an Indian
restaurant, the IndiaGarden.Seems a shame to write another review of a
restaurant in the Netherlands
that didn’t serve Dutch food, but our experience in all honesty was that ethnic
cuisine of places foreign to the Netherlands was terrific. Thus, another review at the end of this
entry…
After dinner we walked back
to the train station, enjoying the streets of Delft a bit more.We adored Delft and were sad to only receive a slight
temptation of what it has to offer.
You definately need to spend a full day here if you come back to NL. I adore Delft, it reminds me of a mini version of Amsterdam, as you said - less tourists - perfect :-)
An excellent purveyor of Indian cuisine in Delft. We started with garlic nan, the first in years, and it was scrumptious! Kim ordered some tea that was flavored with cardamom and she was in heaven, especially after our very cold day. I ordered some curry soup and beef vindaloo, which was prepared with the perfect amount of spicy heat. Kim ordered some tandoori shrimp that was served with a warmed sauce…she scooped it up with her garlic nan and just smiled…
Things were going well and we were in no hurry to depart delightful Delft, so on to dessert! Kim enjoyed some Indian ice cream, mango coconut, and although I can’t eat sweets, something on the menu caught my eye. A Grolsch draft for only two euro --- WOW, I hadn’t seen these prices since leaving the states. Though I enjoyed my beer, the wee price was justified by being served in a wee glass…
