Phonsavan bus station

So after having great time in Phonsavan, it was time for us to move to our next destination, Vang Vieng. I had heard a lot about VV before I came to Laos. Mostly were about how fun it was to do tubing in the river. And I was determined to do that myself when I was there. But my friend had second thought about that. She heard a nasty story about a guy that did tubing in the river and got infected. Apparently there was a worm that crawled into his skin while he was in the water and reproduced in his skin.. I have no idea if this is a real story, and so I still felt that I should go for it.

This time we decided to take the local bus to Vang Vieng, which we later found out was a good choice as the bus ticket was way cheaper than get it from a tour company.

Of course that was only if you buy it from the local bus station. As our trip from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan, the scenery outside the bus window was breath taking, and as deadly as the previous one. Things got worst when it started to rain, I couldn't see clearly thru the rain and I wondered how much better the driver could see. Because I couldn't do anything, so I did something which I am good at, sleep :) I wasn't sure how long I slept, but when I woke up the bus wasn't moving. Then later we found out that was because a truck slipped from the road and fell down from the edge of the road. It was basically hanging by the cliff. And there was a crane trying to pull it up. I wasn't sure if there was people insidee, I hope not.

Finally after 5 hours we arrived in one piece at VV! My first impression about VV was it was so so touristy. Once we hit the main street, we saw numerous of hostels, restaurants with menu written in Korean, Japanese, English, and tour companies. And yeah, ladies walking on the street with only bikini tops and guys with only short definitely contribute a lot making this place feeling touristy (I am sure the locals don't walk half naked on the streets!) We didn't really like what we saw, but we were here anyway!

Checked in to a pretty decent hostel with beds for three, we went straight to a tour company to book for a tour. Initially I really tempted to go for the half caving and half tubing tour. But after seeing what I saw and heard the description about tubing from the tour company's tour, I decided to give up tubing and go for kayaking.

So our tour on the next day would be exploring the caves, walking into the village, and kayaking on the beautiful Nam Song River.

It turned out we made a really good choice. After exploring the caves and walking under the hot sun, we were on our kayak down the Nam Song River. I was kayaking with our tour guide, which was really really nice, coz he did all the hard work making sure our kayak was moving lol, and I did contribute, well a little and spent most my energy enjoying the view surrounding the river :) The first few km on the river was peaceful until we reached alomst the end, where lots and lots of pubs and clubs were on the banks along the river. They played really bad music, and people were jumping down from the swing rope into the river.... The whole thing really didn't fit in, and spoil the serenity that we had before.
