The Essentials of Sacramento
I have been working on a title for logs regarding cities I have lived in or have visited. I have been working off of that premise you find in the airline magazines when ever you fly across the country. You know they have these things that tell the tourist how to spend at least three days in town and get the maximum out of that visit. I am not really trying to set up a three day weekend, but I wanted to share some of the things that I find essential to each of the major cities I have lived and or visited. There is no formula or pattern, just thing about places I think make that city what it is. There are tons of places to see, events to participate in, and things to do, maybe too many to list in these blogs. Everyone will experience different things and may have something to add. This is not meant to be anything but a short blurb of I have come up with. I would encourage everyone to take a moment to share things about their cities that will make a visit seem more like home. The challenge has been sent.

SHOP IN AIR CONDITIONING
Arden Fair Mall
(916) 920-1167
This is a great mall that was renovated years ago. When I was a little boy, my dad worked at the Sears and we would get to go and walk up and down the mall as we waited for him to get off work. Since then, they have really transformed the mall into a bit of a show place. Macy’s, Neiman’s, JC Penny, Sears and a host of other stores make it a great place to spend the day. They have valet parking as well as a really big Merry Go Round. Don’t forget the Cinnabon located on the upper level outside of Sears.
BUY GROCERIES
Trader Joe’s
5 locations in the Sacramento area
This small grocer specializes in reasonably priced natural and hard-to-find foods, promising that their eggs are always cage-free and their private label products are never made with genetically modified foods. Need another reason to shop TJ's? Check out their wine and beer selection. These guys offer some really great and reasonably priced wines. This is the place you’ll find "two buck Chuck," a light-on-the-wallet wine made exclusively for Trader Joe's by Charles Shaw; it's shelved alongside a large selection of other quality beer and wine.
The bulk products are really good and also help the environment. If you don’t know how or why, don’t even ask.

TO PEOPLE WATCH
This is a great place to grab a cup of coffee, or whatever your vice might be, and just sit and watch all the people go by. It is amazing just how different we all are as a people. There is such a juxtaposition of characters that walk down the way. I like to sit near the center food court on the 2nd level. Try it, you will not be disappointed. They also have a Hard Rock Café to buy all your music souvenirs.

GET FRESH
Sunday Farmer's Market
Corner of Eighth and W streets
You can find in-season fresh fruits and vegetables, along with honey, baked goods and herbs, at the Sunday Farmer's Market. Get there early for the best selection (and to avoid the summertime heat), but if you're looking for a bargain, keep an eye on the vendors who are packing up, they'd rather sell it cheap than cart it back to the farm. I never got to go here because I am always in church at the time the market’s open, but my dad really enjoys going there and says it is one of those must do’s when you visit the area. There are also about 4 other markets scattered across the area including the Tuesday markets at Roosevelt Park and Freemont Park; Wednesday Markets at Caesar Chavez Park in downtown and the Elk Grove Regional Park; Thursday Markets at Downtown Plaza, Florin Mall and the Dollar Tree on Florin Rd and the Saturday markets Sunrise Mall, Country Club Mall and in Del Paso Heights at the Robertson Center.

This downtown hole in the wall is a one-man show, with each meal prepared by owner and Frenchman, Daniel Pont, as it's ordered. During baseball season, the Sacramento River Cats -- the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A’s baseball team " gives a chance to get out and see a great ballgame without having to cross a toll-bridge.
If you are a bargain-hunter or have a pretty large family or group, you will find that the lawn seats are the best option, both for their reasonable price and the chance to move about freely before the seventh inning stretch. The team puts on a pretty good show, so take an evening to go out and watch, then stroll through Old Sacramento to walk off all those hot dogs.

My friend Jesse works here and he loves to show people around. It is a nice place to come and see some pretty nice pieces of work. The price is pretty good and it is pretty accessible by all modes of transportation. It is a place that is digitizing all of its work which can be accessed on the web. It is a nice day out.

I don’t like beer, but one of my brothers says this is a pretty good place that is located in East Sac. Bonn Lair is a British-style pub with a large assortment of imported beer on tap. The menu features traditional pub food (think shepherd's pie), but it's also seems pretty common for people to bring food in from other nearby restaurants.

Located in Midtown, this community-minded coffee joint also serves beer and wine, along with a simple menu of sandwiches, pizza by the slice and healthy snacks. Parking is also pretty good around this area.

Sacramento Zoo
Land Park Drive & 16th Ave.

Situated within William Land Park, the Sacramento Zoo sits on more than 14 acres and is home to alot of exotic animals including snow leopards, reticulated giraffes, chimpanzees and ring-tailed lemurs. The manageable size of this zoo makes it possible to see all of the exhibits in a day, and still have time to explore nearby Fairy Tale Land. When I was a little boy, my father would take us down here often. It stills brings back such good memories that I would recommend that even you older types should stop in and enjoy an afternoon of childhood memories.

In 1847 Sutter sent aid to the Donner Party, a group of immigrants trapped in a winter storm in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Word spread and Sutter became known for his hospitality and for providing temporary refuge to travelers. This reputation made New Helvetia the destination for early immigrants to California.
The time you spend exploring will be well worth it. It is also the place that when Sutter wanted to start a saw mill he had a guy to build it on the American River. While digging, he found gold and the rush was on. So much to experience. I highly recommend this place.
