I can still feel the grit in my teeth

Being a visitor to Lisbon was like trying on someone's pair of really ratty slippers that you've been envying for years because they looked so comfortable; they're old and dirty yet you covet them and wish that they fit you properly so you could feel like you belonged together, and you could know that kind of comfort.  Lisbon is old, and it's dirty, and it's certainly frayed at the edges, but boy would it be cool to belong there.  It feels like a European New York City in that sense, and just as exclusive a club.  When the *ancient* streetcars go rumbling by they mean business.  When that dude at the bar wants his beer and pork sandwich you don't get in his way.  And everyone leaves you alone. So there you are, hanging out in some city park along with the other bums, waiting for laundry to dry at the laundromat, drinking a soda or perhaps wine out of the bottle, and minding your own business along with everyone else in a city which knows what it is, and never tries to be anything else.
