My Olympic hockey ticket!

One day to cram in the Olympics.  Have tickets to the short track event (Womens 500m gold medal, Mens 5000m relay, Mens 1000m) and Mens Ice Hockey (USA vs Latvia).  I also hope to see the speedskating...Chad Hedrick!!  And take full advantage of that 24-hour Chocopass.

I am in Venice right now but wanted to write about the Olympics!!  The overnight train was SO SMALL!  We got our own cabin with bunk beds and could barely move.  There was no shower, just a toilet down the hall.  But we were just happy to sleep on a bed that we didn't care!!!  We got about 6 hours of sleep and arrived in Torino at 8:30am.

Our tiny sleeper cabin on the overnight Rome-Torino train
  Torino is beautiful.

We bought a 24-hour Chocopass for 10 Euros, which allowed us to taste a bunch of different chocolates at different places all around the city.  Torino is known for its chocolate, particularly hazelnut (my favorite).  It was well worth the 10 Euros...the chocolates were AMAZING!!!!  My favorite was bicerin and cake at Al Bicerin, where we met a couple of Americans who worked at the US Olympic training center in Colorado Springs and they gave us Olympics pins!   Everyone we met so far was so welcoming and nice.

We went to the Mole Antonelliana, where we got a great view of Torino.  We then hopped on a bus to go to our first Olympic event -- speedskating.
Me in Torino, Italy -- Day 5 of the 2006 Winter Olympics
I couldn't believe I was going to the Olympics!!!  I was beyond excited.  We visited the ladies room in the arena, where I was dismayed to see the toilet in my stall.  I just assumed they were all like this so I didn't question it.  Let's just say it was very awkward!  While I was waiting for Ngoc outside, I noticed a diagram of the bathroom and saw that I was in the only stall with that kind of toilet!  Figures I would pick that one!  The speedskating event was really fun and exciting, but USA lost in the qualifying round :(  I was happy to see Chad Hedrick since there was so much hype about him possibly winning 5 gold medals, not to mention he is pretty cute :)

We then headed to the Palavela, where we had tickets to see short track speedskating.  Ngoc is a big Apolo Anton Ohno fan, so she was so excited to see him compete.
The goodness of Al Bicerin -- cin cin!!
We had amazing seats in the 2nd row!  We got to see the team relays, which was one of the most exciting and exhilirating things I've ever adrenaline was racing!!  If you know me, I'm a pretty laid back and quiet....but I was cheering so much for the USA team that the Canadians next to us called us "Loud Americans!" :)

After that, we hopped on the bus to see the USA-Lativa hockey game...we were exhausted by this point!  After the game, we got some dinner at Stars & Roses near the train station.  We loved it and we had our first taste of barbera d'alba wine, which quickly became our favorite!  I had the linguine alla carbonara and kiwi salad (dessert), and we shared the fried calamari.  We ate in the pink room where we had the most gorgeous waiter!  The food and wine were absolutely delicious...if you are ever in Torino, I definitely recommend it!

We had planned to go to Cinque Terre the next day, but we were so exhausted and in need of a bed and shower, so we decided to head straight to Venice.  The train didn't leave until 6am, so we spent the night at the train station since lodging was nowhere to be found in Torino, thanks to the Olympics.  A lot of people were there spending the night too so we weren't alone, and the cops kept doing rounds and waking people up.  We were sad to be leaving Torino, but we didn't know then that we would be coming back the following week!!!
