Tiny Planes and Secluded beaches
March 8, 2009
Kristen, Cortney and I decided to go to San Juan for a fun & relaxing girls weekend. We had heard about the Island of Culebra and really wanted to go. There are 2 ways of getting there, either a ferry from Fajardo (which is about a $90 cab ride from San Juan) or a Plane right from the little airport 5 minutes from our hotel (The Caribe Hilton). The ferry costs $4.25 round trip, plane was about $100. We were told we would have to get to the ferry over an hour in advance because there are a limited number of tickets and they run out. We were not thrilled about waking up early to take the long expensive cab ride to Fajardo (not to mention cab ride back) and the hour and a half long ferry both ways. Flying was more feasible to maximize the amount of time on the island.
Only one obstacle, Kristen is petrified to fly in general, and convincing her to take a tiny plane where there were only 6 seats would be a near impossible feat. After me and Cortney won big at the Casino in the El San Juan hotel on Friday, the cost of the flight was no longer daunting. I won $200 on a slot machine, that's the extent of my gmbling :o) . Now the only task was to convince Kristen. The next day we asked the concierge what he thought of flying and he made a motion with his hands of a plane wabbling all over the sky, saying the plane is small and it is windy, you do the math. Well this was just about the worst thing he could have said and Kristen's face turned white. Another guy told us not to listen to him and that he flies there once a week and it's fine.
Well that night after a few drinks Kristen finally said ok, lets do it. I couldn't believe it ! We got to the airport the next morning, and they actually had to weigh us and our beach bags to figure out who sat where on the plane to balance the wieght. I was so proud of Kristen, she looked petrified, but she got on. She was very silent for the half an hour flight, but she made it ! And the views were great ! (see pictures :o) ) We flew between these 2 hills to get to the runway and it felt like a roller coaster ! I loved it, Kristen of course did not. But the actual landing was smooth. From the airport we got a cab to Flamenco beach, and he actually made a pit stop at his cousin's house to drop off her cell phone.
He told us that we were arriving during rush hour. We got to the beach and found about 4 other people on the mile stretch of sand ! It wa sbeautiful. We walked to the end to find a good spot and then I walked back to the parkign lot to get us food. I got us chicken kebabs, with fried plaintains and some fish kebabs. They were delicious ! We spent the day frolicking in the sand and surf and watching these 2 adorable ducks who kept walkign up and down the beach together. I didn't want to leave this beautiful place, but we had to head back eventually to catch the last plane back to San Juan. It was a great day and I would definitely go back and stay the night on Culebra so I can see the downtown area, as we just went to the beach.
