Watch for smoke....

After the troubles with the ferry, I wanted to forget those hassles, so headed out to Sainte Pierre for the afternoon.  St Pierre was the former capital of the island until 1902, when it was completely destroyed by an eruption from Mont Pelee.  30,000 people died and only one survived (who ironically was a prisoner in gaol).  Much of it has been rebuilt and it was interesting walking round some of the ruins and seeing the photos in the museum of how it looked before and after the eruption.  Apparently now they have high-tech ways of telling if an eruption is imminent.  Even so....
