Another early start as we ventured onwards to San Felix. We were joined by Ramesh`s relative Maria (whose son was married to Ramesh`s sister I think) lived in Carupano but was going to San Felix to visit relatives. Sadly my Spanish did not stand up to interrogation, so we struggled along with the odd word and plenty of smiles. Seems to be my get out clause when my Spanish fails! We tried getting the 7.30am bus, but had to wait til 9am as it was full. It gave us time to grab an arepa (corn based patty with any number of fillings!) and fresh juice for breakfast (for a bargain 13 bolivares/GBP1.50/US$2) at the market.
The journey was 8 hours (60 bolivares/US$10/GBP7), but was comfortable enough with air-con etc.
We arrived in San Felix at about 5pm and were greeted by Maria`s sister and nephew. Ramesh and I weren`t planing on staying with them, but they wouldn`t hear of us staying anywhere else! What could we do?! We gratefully accepted their hospitality and went along with Maria`s nephew as he needed to do some chores in nearby Upata - while he did so, we passed the time by gorging ourselves on ice-cream - they have these little carts everywhere, selling it for about 30p a go - brilliant!
Maria was planning to go to El Callao tomorrow, which is in the heart of the gold-mining country. Its on the road to Santa Elena where I am going to get a Roraima tour, so I decided to tag along. It would mean another early start and Maria promised she`d be knocking on our doors at 5.30am...
