Beautiful town centre of Pucon, with Volcan Villarica in the background

I took the cross-boder bus from San Martin, which left ridiculously early at 6am - I had no option, there's only one bus a day to Pucon...damn you bloody Argentinians!!  It was a beautiful drive, nice cloudless day and we went through the Parque National Lanin as we crossed into Chile...surely one of the most beautiful border crossings in the world!  Typical bag checks etc trying to get into Chile took an hour or so, but around 11am we rolled into Pucon, with the stunningly imposing Volcan Villarica on the horizon.  Pucon has an awesome setting here in the Lake District, with Lago Villarica on one side and Volcan Villarica in the background about 30km away.

Unfortunately I was coming down with a head cold the day I arrived, so my time here has been spent relaxing and trying to get myself better.

The black-sand beach around Lago Villarica...I can imagine this place gets rammed in high-summer!
Its not a place to bed and I found a great little hostel to stay at, which was just what I needed.  Whilst everyone was heading off to climb the volcano at stupid-o'clock in the morning, I was lying-in and then getting up to sit in front of the wood-fire and catching up with people from home.  The climb (apx CLP45,000/£60/$85) sounded great and the pictures people brought back were fantastic.  There's also world class rafting and kayaking around here, so I was a bit gutted to be feeling crap and not able to get out and do some activities.  Still, I've been lucky enough to have done loads of my trip, so I can't complain!  I went out and had a look round the town and caught up with Peter (who I originally met in Cuzco and then again in San Pedro) and we had a glass of wine or two down by the lake, all very civilized!

Hopefully I will be feeling better this week as I head up to Maule Valley for some wine-tasting and then finish off in Santiago!
