Wolmido Island Boat Cruise
October 21, 2006
Wolmido Island used to be an isolated island located about a km off the Incheon coast. It became part of the mainland, after the creation of a highway. The name Wolmido Island is said to be from the shape of the island due to resembling the tail of a half moon.
The day started with a visit to the only "official" Chinatown in Korea for brunch. Afterwards, walked up a small hill to Jayu (Freedom) Park, where a statue of General Douglas MacArthur and a memorial to the centennial anniversary of Korea and US relations is located. In the Green Beach area, there is a small theme park "Play Hill" along with a boardwalk, many cafes and seafood/raw fish restaurants. Next was an hour long cruise on the Cosmos Ferry (complete with an entertainment show) to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the coast of the island.
In February 2007, Incheon declared itself an "English City" and started the "Incheon Free English Zone" program with the goal to make Incheon as much of an English speaking city as Hong Kong and Singapore. With the International Airport located in Incheon, the ultimate goal is to become an official business and commercial hub for Northeast Asia.
