Washington Nationals Game

I went with my friend, Mark, to Shenandoah National Park over Memorial Day weekend. We also stopped in DC to catch a Nationals game in their new stadium.

On our way to Shenandoah, we drove down to DC to catch the Friday night game between the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles.  The sky and weather were gorgeous all weekend for both baseball and hiking.  We were pretty fortunate with traffic, but you could see major backups in the opposite direction.  All weekend long we saw hundreds of motorcycles, most of which were veterans coming to DC for Memorial Weekend.

Before the game, we walked from our hotel to the Capital Hill neighborhood for dinner.  We walked by the Marine Barracks where Memorial Day weekend festivities were going on.  We ate at a terrific Belgian restaurant called Belga Cafe.  They have an extensive list of every style of Belgian ale and menu that contains both traditional Belgian dishes as well modern interpretations and fusions.

While the game was an interleague matchup between two of the worst teams this year, it did hold local appeal with the two teams being located so close to each other.  There were plenty of Orioles fans to make it interesting in the stands.  Collecting baseball stadiums is a long time hobby of Mark's.  This was #39 for him and just #14 for me.  We had both to a Nationals game together before at RFK, but now was our chance to see the beautiful Nationals Park.  Located right on the Capitol Waterfront adjacent to the Naval Yards, the area is still developing so it is currently fairly quiet and light in traffic.  The park has an open, airy feel and reminds me very much of Philadelphia's Citizen Bank Park.

Nolan Reimold hit a home run for the Orioles and Ryan Zimmerman hit one for the Nationals early to tie it up 2-2 in the 4th.  It would remain that score until the top of the 12th when the O's got an unlikely 2 out hit from reliever Danys Baez followed by doubles by Brian Roberts and Adam Jones.   Fireworks were launched from the water after the game that we could see standing in front of our hotel.

Best Choice close to Nationals Park
Built in 2006, Marriott was able to be the first in the area to provide a good hotel option for staying close to Nationals Park. Many nearby lots are abandoned or simply for Nationals parking, but you can see that the Waterfront area is growing. Several fairly new looking corporate buildings are in the vicinity. It is only a 3 block walk to the stadium and a little bit further to a plethora of good restaurants in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. While some parts of the walk to Capitol Hill may feel slightly unsafe, police patrol the area frequently and you are always close to Marine guarded barracks.
Excellent Belgian Food and Beer
8th Street in the Capitol Hill area is teeming with good eateries. One such example is Belga Cafe at which one should feel comfortable either all dressed up or in casual attire prior to going to a Nationals game. They have both indoor and outdoor seating when the weather is nice. They have one of the most extensive lists of Belgian beers that I have seen from Grand Cru bottles to their own brew on tap to lambics. They not only carry authentic Belgian beers but also American microbrews made in Belgian styles. The same is true of their menu which consists of traditional Belgian standards as well as inventive fusion dishes. They also serve seasonal tastings. While I was there, they had a list of dishes all inspired by fresh asparagus. I started off the meal with a duck consommé that was presented by pouring the broth over cubes of foie gras and dried morels. For the entrée, I had pork tenderloin from the asparagus menu that was served with pork belly, morels with sauce over mashed potatoes and of course asparagus. The meal was accompanied by a bottle of N'Ice Chouffe the winter seasonal from La Chouffe.
