Well, for me it definetely was the trip to Croatia last summer!
My friend called me up, and said: "Hey, you like to join us for a vacation trip to Croatia? By the way, we are leaving in an hour!".
What can I say... about an hour later they picked me up and we headed to Croatia. From my place, it's about 1000km, which takes about 11-12 hours with the car.
You have to go through Austria and Slovenia to get there. We left Germany at around 8pm and arrived down at Radac just in time to see the most wonderful sunrise.
When I was a kid, my parents used to go down to Croatia for vacation, which back then was Yugoslavia. Can you imagine a family going 1500km from North Rhine Westphalia to Split in southern Yugoslavia in a Volkswagen Beetle with a complete camping equipment? Well, those were the days in the late 60's!
Luckily, today we were able to ride down there in an airconditioned Volvo! ;-)
It was nice to be back in the country where my family used to go on vacation decades ago.
We rented an appartment up in the hills of Radac, a nice small town in the south east of Istria which is a county of Croatia.
Like so many beaches in Croatia, those in Rabac are peeble stone beaches. You get used to the stones, but you might consider to buy some special swimming shoes and a thick foam mat. After all, this way you don't have to deal with sand getting in every crack ;-)
The water is wonderful, blue and very clear. Great for snorkling, too!
One of the best thing in this area is the food - fresh seafood that is! You'll love the fresh broiled calamari and all the other seafood! If you go up the hill to the next town Lapin to get some groceries at the Lidl supermarket, you definetely should visit the market downtown! They sell fresh fish and all sorts of fruit and vegetables.
You also might consider to go on a fish picnic trip to the nearby island of Cres by boat. They serve you nice seafood, beer and wine on the cruise and you get to see the nice city of Cres on the island. We even had the chance to chill out on a beach, that long time ago used to be a smugglers hide out.
Well, it was a very nice vacation! Too bad I had to leave after 5 days to go back to work...
Hope I'll have the chance to go back to Croatia.
