Apart from the science, yesterday during a conference break Lina and I went to Checkpoint Charlie, the site of the transit point between East Berlin and West Berlin. The museum there was quite interesting, but the Checkpoint itself was the first dissapointment I have had in Berlin. A complete Disneyland simplified version marketed directly towards American tourists, it was just cringe-worthy. I much more enjoyed walking along the old route of the wall, seeing the remaining blocks of graffiti-covered concrete lying there silent and dirty.
Fortunately, Berlin regained its lost kudos at the conference dinner. How very Berlin to have an exclusive club in a converted warehouse. No signs to attract party-goers in this run-down part of West Berlin, you just enter via an old shipping container leaning up against the wall. Ah Berlin, you make me feel like using the word über, and even then you make it trendier with those little umlauts.
