Visit to Keukenhof
May 16, 2009
A friend of mine, Satu, moved to A'dam a week earlier for four months.
She felt like she needs to see Holland as much as possible and her aunt
had suggested to go to Keukenhof. On Friday she said that she's going
there the next day and asked if I wanted to go with her. I didn't
really know what it was or anything but I said why not. Great to see a
new place in Holland and do something different.
The weather had been bad lately but she said that there should be some sunshine on Saturday. And it was. In the morning I looked outside and didn't see any clouds. It was hard to decide what to wear because it still wasn't really warm. But finally I went with capris, a top and sandals and took a coat with me. Outside I realize that at the other side of the sky there is dark clouds :(
We live five minutes from each other and met in a store 9. 30 to get some snack for the day. We biked to Sloterdijk train station and took a train to Haarlem. There was still some way to go, 40 minutes by bus to Lisse. We weren't quite sure where to get off so it was exciting. When we almost got there we were told to get off and go to another bus in front of us. The other bus took us to the end and how friendly the bus drivers were.
Outside of Keukenhof Satu said that she probably forgot to mention how much it costs. 13,50 €. It sounded quite a lot because I thought that it's just a small park with flowers. But still I was ok with it. We saw a lot of buses outside and bunch of tourists going towards the entrance. Still there was no queue to the ticket booths so I guess others had bought their tickets in advance online as I learnt that it is possible. At the entrance we had to queue for a bit though but not too long. It was quite windy.
When we got in I realized that it wasn't just a small park, as a matter of fact, quite big. The tulip season was over but there was at least lily and orchidea exhibitions. We saw all these colorful flowers and some with names we didn't know. There were even some tulips left. Soooo beautiful ! There was even an animal area with a donkey, a pony, coats, labs, chickens, a rooster, turkey, mini pigs etc. The sun wasn't really shining anymore and we got some train drops as well. Freezing.
We walked around for 3,5 hours and had lunch on hay bales. It was totally worth of the entrance fee ! What a nice Saturday we had :)
