The first written proof of the existence of Kampen dates back to 1227. However there were foundations found of a Roman church dating back as far as the 12th Century. Kampen used to trade with many including the Hanze and it's competitor, but when war broke uit between the two Kampen decided to become part of the Hanze, and therefore a Hanseatic city, around 1440.

Boats used to travel between Kampen and the East Sea, the north German Coast, England, France and Holland. This was all possible because of the new "kogge", a much more seaworthy ship than they had ever had before. The warf where these boats were built hosts the International Hanzekoggetreffen (Hanseatic kogge meet-up) this year.

There around 500 monuments in the city to remind us of this time, and a lot of artefacts can be found in the "Stedelijk Museum", behind which you can find an old "rosmolen", a mill driven by horses. Around 1400 the city centre was expanded quite considerably and a new city wall was built. In this wall there were 20 entry aches, of which 3 still remain. One windmill, d'Olde Zwarver, can still be found as well.

Hey what an interesting blog! I had heard of the Hanseatic League, it rang a bell with me but I wasn't sure what it was. I have just been reading up on the net all about the English cities which were part of this group, very interesting! I look forward to reading the rest of your blog :-)
