A week in Prague with my daughter
May 8, 2009
This was a trip that was planned rather last minute when my daughter was moving away and off to school. When asked where she wanted to go she announced "Prague". Ok ... not somewhere I ever wanted to go ... but after some research it looked like a popular destination so it was off to Prague! The city itself was very beautiful, very historic and old, lots of cobblestone streets and churchs. A nice town to meander around and see the sights. I certainly would not recommend any longer than a week here. The shopping was not great (sorry, it is what we like to do). We are not big into churchs and museums but can appreciate their beauty. And if anyone says the people in Prague are friendly, I would have to say they are nuts!! The women in Prague were especially rude and nasty! Any store we went into had some nasty witch working in it who was down right rude! And they were rude and nasty before we even opened our mouths so I don't think it was the fact that we didn't know their language. Actually, the women in Italy were not that nice either but compared to this wenches, they were dolls ( and the men more than made up for it). The men here were just as unfriendly as the women. And ugly to boot. We had one nice waiter in the "Hard Rock Cafe" but come to find out he was from Sweden. Another peron who was nice to us was from Lebanon, otherwise ... forget it! Did I have a good time .... yes. Would I ever go back? No.

Avoided something
I want to share an experience I had boarding a tram in Prague. As I was climbing the stairs to enter the tram, the man ahead of me dropped his satchel which caused me to stop on the stairs. I felt a person behind me pushing me and when I turned around a man with an Addidas bag was using the bag to push against me, close to my bag. I clutched the bag closer and said (i know in English) "he dropped his bag". The man continued to push me while saying something harshly and I kind of lost it and screamed at him "people are so rude in this F------ country" Well, I know he understood my profanity and started yelling back at me, I turned my back but then noticed that both he, and the man who dropped the bag jumped off at the next stop which couldn't have been more than 100 feet away. I think my crazy American tourist act saved me from a potential mugging.
One more thing! While it seems easy to jump on and off the metros and trams without paying, we did get stopped at a Metro station by a badged man who asked for our ticket.

Ugly in Prague
You have got this beautiful city of Prague ... old historic buildings, beautiful bridges, and this hideous tower looming near the center of it all. That was what I thought of the Prague TV tower and I am quite sure everyone agrees. This tower was originally built to block Western radio signals from entering this communist city. Now its used to broadcast reality show TV programs. I think they should have knocked it down. It has faceless black babies crawling up the side of it which adds to its overall ugliness. But we had to go in, pay to have an elevator take us to the observation deck and even had a pretty nice lunch at the restaurant they have in the tower.

Near Vysehrad Castle
This hotel literally sits beyond the walls of Vysehrad Castle. Now, if you think this is a good location, fine, but I would rather be closer to Charles Bridge. The hotel itself was nice. They had a lift, nice rooms, Great bathrooms, very substantial breakfast buffet. And as far as location you were very close to a Metro stop and a Tram stop. I included a picture of some strange artwork which decorated their hallways. The bathroom was the best thing about this room, big jacuzzi tub, new fixtures, great lighting, clean.
The first night we each got our …
Near Vysehrad Castle
This little restaurant was very close to our hotel. Definitely a local restaurant, I think they had to blow the dust off the English menu. But though we waited a VERY long time for our food, it was very good, obviously freshly made, and very reasonable. So it you are visiting Vysehrad Castle and want a good meal, see if you can find this place (which is also very close to a tram station) After our first night, we thought for sure we would be there every night, but our exhaustion won out and only went here on our first night.
Petrin Tower
This tower can be found very close to Prague Castle. Actually the walk from the castle to this attraction is very pleasant. Forgive me, but I will be comparing this to that ugly TV tower. Yeah, this tower really doesn't fit in with the Prague historical charm, but not as hideous as the Tv tower. They both offer great views of the city. While my lazy daughter wouldn't walk up to see these great views ... I guess one might think the TV tower is a better option with its elevator. But with this tower, much of the viewing is in the open air, the walk up is totally open, and at the top you can take your pictures through an opening as opposed to through glass. I enjoyed this site.
Addorable Bistro
I wish I knew the exact name of this adorable little Bistro with the great pizza! I took a picture right in front,(but the name got blocked out) Look for that old radio in the window and if you are near John Lennons wall and want to stop at a Quaint little place with so much charm and really good pizza, make an effort to find this place. We ate in the indoor "garden area" which was so charming. Had the only good glass of wine to be found in Prague (yeah, I finally just drank the beer) and just enjoyed by time spent here.
You know what you are gettin with Hard Rock
I know you won't get your traditional food here, but, this is the one place in Prague where the staff treated us so nice, something I really needed after being shabbily treated for days! Our waiter was actually from Sweden and he was SOOO sweet (like I said, I really needed this) The hostess and manager were also very nice. The food, well it is typical Hard Rock Fare! It is nice sometime to know what to expect!! I think I am now one of those people who will collect Hard Rock pins from every where she ever goes. And always remember the very sweet boy (from Lebanon) who helped us in the store that day.
Graffeti
We understood that after Johns death, some people gathered at this wall to share their grief and painted something on the wall. The secret police found out and quickly covered it over. But every night the same graffiti would reappear, many times with Johns face. They finally gave up and declared this the only wall in Prague where graffiti is legal. (I hope I got this all straight)
