North Shore
As a day trip we decided to journey to the other side of Oahu for the first time. There was supposed to be a 10 foot swell coming in and I wanted to see. It sounds like you are going to be in the car for a while since you are going to the other side and all. It takes maybe 45 minutes to take the long way. Anyway, the Noth Shore was like a different island. We were so used to the city life at this point that we were stunned by the open "country." We took the Kam Highway which actually wraps around most of the island and makes a great Sunday drive. We would be driving along and then all of a sudden the road would open up and there would be a beautiful blue ocean with 10 foot waves crashing against the beaches.
Haleiwa (pronounced with a v instead of a w) was a great little town. Small and quaint but it definately knew how to cater to the tourists. There is a market there called North Shore Marketplace. It had a lot of really neat shops and a great little Mexican restaurant. We have learned it is really hard to find good Mexican here so we were very happy to have a taste.
