Back to the city of Beer-MUNICH!
March 26, 2009
Up at 4:30am...not cool, but we're off to MUNICH so that's OK! We planned to stay at the hostel we did because it was the closest one to Liverpool Station so we could get to Stansted Airport for our Easy Jet flight to Munich. It was an 8quid taxi ride to the station and we were early for the first Stansted Express train to the airport. Enough time to get a croissant and coffee, and boy did we need them.
We got to the airport nice and early and checked into our flight and then went through security. We had some more breakfast on the other side while waiting to boar the flight. Finally time to board and for my nerves to start kicking in. To be honest, I don't like flying. I would just much rather be on the ground and take off is the worst part for me. Once in the air I'm ok but the slighest change in motion will freak me out! Waiting for take off..."Can you smell gas???" Guess I will never live that one down from Matt.
But the flight was fine and soon enough we were in MUNICH!! My favourite city! I have been to Munich before back in Summer 07 when I did my first European tour with Melissa and I loved it so much. Since we got a cheap flight from Dusseldorf to Bangkok, Matt and I decided to spend a week in Germany before heading to Asia and I just had to go back to Munich. Matt had never been before so a new city for him and he loves beer so I know he'll love it here!
The hostel that we were staying at in Munich is the Euro Youth Hostel and I recommend everyone to stay here when they go to Munich. Only 10 euro a night and it's very clean and modern! Nice comfy beds, very very good showers/bathrooms. Theres also a cheap bar, lounge area, and a buffet breakfast which was included in the price! However I don't think it's normally included in the price but as there was some renovations going on at the time, I think that's why we got it for free.
We got there around 12ish but couldn't check in until 2pm so Matt and I went for a little wander and stopped at some small cafe for lunch. It was proper old school and looked exactly the same as what I'm assuming it looked like in the 60's haha. Our waitress didn't speak any English and the menus were only in German but we managed to order 2 1/2L beers and 2 schnitzels. And man it was good food and beer. Actually it was the wheat beer that to me tastes like cloves but was still good, I normally prefer just a lager though haha.
In Munich there are tons of different pub crawls that you can go on but Matt and I decided to go on our very own beer crawl! We started off at the hostel bar for happy hour with 1/2L beers only being 2euro! We got in a few there and then headed to Marienplatz to go to Viktvalienmarkt Beer Garden for our next stop. But key word being beer GARDEN and it wasn't open when we got there haha. But we found another place that was right near by and went in there for a beer.
Next stop: HOFBRAUHAUS!!! My favourite place in the whole entire World :D I was soo sooo happy to be back here! And we had a brilliant table right near the band. The good thing about the hofbrahaus is that they are massive tables and you can never really get one to yourself so it forces you to sit with strangers and make friends. But everyone is there enjoying the beer and the atmosphere so everyone is friendly and you get talking to people. We got talking to the people next to us and it was a couple from Virgina, USA, named Nelson and Laura. They were really nice. At their table was also a very happy fellow from Hamburg named Walter and his wife. We fell in love with Walter right away, he was so jolly and friendly and kept "prosting" us.
Matt and I both had the big steins of beer and stupidly I went for a 2nd. I was trying to keep up with Matt and good thing I learned early on in our two months together not to do that. By the time the Hofbrahaus was closing I was pretty wasted. But we still wanted to continue our beer crawl so we got a taxi with Nelson and Laura and some other random Americans that we met outside to Trinkhalle which was a beer hall open until 3am. Well the map that we had said it was a beer hall but it was really more just a bar.
I guess once we left the Hofbrahaus and I was walking around the booze really hit me as I don't recall much from Trinkhalle except having a drink and then being a bit ill. There was this weird light coming from under our table that really messed me up and made me feel dizzy which I think had something to do with the feeling ill. Ahh who am I kidding, I was drunk!
I just had to get back to the hostel after this and we took a taxi to where Nelson and Laura were staying and then walked to our hostel from there. Was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow!
