Gettysburg (seems like tears from heaven) very wet!! and Williamsport
Friday May 1, 2009
Have to get everybody out of their bed in time, because we wanted to see a lot during our trip to Williamsport. So at 7.00 am breakfast and checking out of the hotel. The car which was parked on a private parking place, had been driven in front of the hotel. Did not have to carry my own luggage! What luxurious! But do not forget to tip the porter! We are Dutch and not used to that. So driving again and on to a supermarket for travel supply. Most of the time it ends up with buying chips and drinks. But this time it was a bit different because the store named Whole Foods Market offered a different kind of food.
In this case fair trade food. So not the brands we used to buy! But these were very good.
Driving on the interstate 270 to Gettysburg. This was a place you really have to visit when you are in the neighborhood. Here the greatest battle ever in American history took place. So really an interesting thing to do. We did the Audio tour with the cd. It was very impressive hearing the cannonball shooting, and the army fire their guns. This tour took about a 2 hours drive in the surrounding of Gettysburg. You will drive along an enormous amount of statues, memorial monuments and nice views. But we were not so lucky that day. It started to rain slow, and then it started to pour! My husband and son stayed in the car, so the only one who was soaked was me!! I wanted to take pictures.
After the tour we went inside the visitor centre and ordered something to eat.
Rain makes you hungry!! It was time to head for Williamsport, wondering what surprise we would face this time. Following the road and driving by Hanover, east-Berlin to Harrisburg. On the right from us is a river called the Susquehanna. From here it was 86 mile to Williamsport.
At 18.30 we arrived at Williamsport. Only a big road in front of us, and downhill Mc donalds. Ok I suppose that would be our dinner for the evening!! I am starting to get used to junk food! Entering the hotel it was not very bad. Not good but ok, only the location too far away from the centre. Walking down hill is not too bad, but we have to go up again, and as soon as possible otherwise the tasty food would get cold. (not a problem for me, I took a salad). Back in the hotel we noticed that the air co did not work, and it was so very warm in the room, and the smell from the air co was strange. Like cooling liquid from a car. Not very healthy. Therefore I had to go to the desk and asked if he could repair the air co. That was not possible, so we had to move to another room. This one was ok. Finally the day was over!
