Over Easter weekend 2009 about 40 of us from Stuttgart, Germany took a bus through amazing Switzerland on a beautiful, clear-blue day to the outskirts of Verona, Italy with our first stop at Al Rocol Fraciacorta Winery. Then we went to downtown Verona for shopping and food, followed the next day by a wine festival with cheese in Negrar outside Verona. A short but magical trip for us!

Downtown Verona, Italy with the walled city, castle, bookshop and Roman coliseum

After the Al Rocol Fraciacorta (French) Winery and Cantine tour, tasting and luncheon, we headed out via the party bus to Verona. We checked into our hotel for the night and immediately took a cab downtown so Jenny could go shopping before the stores all closed within an hour. After the stores closed, we ate pizza on the old town square overlooking the Roman coliseum and horse-drawn carriages as the lights came on. We stopped in to an old Italian bookstore which had been in the family for over 6 generations and they also had a shop in Venice. The mood, food and groove were spectacular as we winded down for the night in our hotel with a beautiful balcony view just outside the walled city of Verona.

Al Rocol Fraciacorta Winery and Cantine winery tour, luncheon and wine tasting.

Our group of about 40 started out at midnight from Germany and arrived in time for lunch at Al Rocol Fraciacorta Winery and Cantine. First, we had to take a tour of the winery and we had to sample a few of the wines. Then they finally let us eat...with delicious food and more wine sampling. I think we tried about 10 wines and we bought about 20 bottles of wine plus a bottle of homemade olive oil. The food, service, tour and scenery was excellent at Al Rocol. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable, plus the flowers in bloom and the mountain goats made it a special place to visit for our first trip outside Germany together since we arrived in August 2008. What a great trip! And...we were just getting started!
