Cafe Caracol

Florence Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In the fall semester of 2005 I had the chance to live in Valbonne, France while I was studying. It was this that gave me my jumpstart in travelling. The chance to have a place I could come back to while I was in Europe made much easier for me to travel the continent pretty much every weeked. Not only did I visit some cities outside France, but I also got the chance to visit some nice French cities and towns along the way. Evidently Paris was at the top ofthe list.

I found this restaurant during the second night a friend and I spent in Firenze. We were walking back from Il Duomo and we were starving, so we started walking around hoping to find a decent place to eat. Eventually we ran into this place "Cafe Caracol" and it just got our attention because it looked as if people were having some sort of party inside. We saw the name Cafe Caracol and the fact that they selled mexican food, that they had a very mexican mood going on and we immediately went in and noticed that in fact there wasn't a single mexican in there.

The place was packed full so when we arrived they asked us if we had a reservation. We said that we hand't any and explained them that we were mexican and that we seriously craved some Mexican food, so they agreed to seat us. =)

I had the enchiladas along with some beer, and I must say that it is some of the best Mexican food I've eaten outside of my country. The prices are a little higher than what I usually pay, but it was well worth it.

This is a small hotel/Guest house that I found two years ago when I visited Florence. I had booked a hotel before I left Valbonne and apparently when I arrived to Florence they were booked solid. however they offered to find me a room elsewhere and that's how I found Mary's house.

The person from Mary´s House came all the way to what was supposed to be my hotel and picked me up and walked me to Mary's House. He also offered me a good deal. According to the website I found just before writing this, right now the price is around 35euros for a private room (shared bathroom).

Anyway, it is really well located in front of the train station and in walking distance (about 10 mins) of the Uffizzi museum. Once you have a room in there they give you 3 keys: one for your room, one for the hotel (located on the 3rd floor, I think) and another one for the building's door.
