House of Terror

Budapest Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In the fall semester of 2005 I had the chance to live in Valbonne, France while I was studying. It was this that gave me my jumpstart in travelling. The chance to have a place I could come back to while I was in Europe made much easier for me to travel the continent pretty much every weeked. Not only did I visit some cities outside France, but I also got the chance to visit some nice French cities and towns along the way. Evidently Paris was at the top ofthe list.

This museum was erected by the Hungarian government (started in 2000 and finished in 2002) to remember the two horror regimens they went through in the 20th century. In 1944 it was the party headquarters of the Hungarian Nazis, the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party. Also between 1945 and 1956 it was home of some Communist terror organizations. This museum is also an iconic monuments for Hungary, becuase the whole building sets you in context for the museums topic.

The museum is actually very good and very complete. It is quite big, including 3 floors and a basement, all of which have something to see. I would advise you visiting this place with time because it does take you some time getting all through it. When I went, it was near the closing time and when they wanted to close, they cut our visit short to show us out. The price is very accesible at only 1500ft, which is about 6 euros and is well worth a visit.
