Somewhere along the route

As today was the first day of our holiday I had decided I didn’t want to get up too early, otherwise it wouldn’t really feel like a holiday! Jordan woke up at 7.38am and came to wake me. (I know, to some of you that is REALLY early…) We stayed in bed until 8 and then decided to go downstairs as we had a Skype appointment at 8.30. Reagan was still asleep and we left her like that for the time being.

We took our time getting ready and eventually left around 10. We took the wrong road almost immediately as I had restarted my navigation system and it had reset itself to roads suited to cars instead of bikes.

Another break
Luckily I figured it out straight away so I could correct the problem.

The first stop we made was at the hospital in Meppel. And no, nothing was wrong! But after riding about 15 minutes the girls both realised they had to go to the toilet even though they didn’t when we left the house, so we decided to use the toilets here.

We then continued on our way and the navigation system took us to IJhorst. We stopped along the way a couple of times for a drink and a snack, and for me to put on my rain jacket. It rained almost the whole way! When we got to IJhorst we thought we’d stop at a café we saw but unfortunately it wasn’t open yet. So again we had something we had brought along ourselves and had to hold on to go to the bathroom…

We rode through very nice countryside but as it was raining so much we didn’t enjoy it as much as we would have riding in sunny weather.

Our cabin
We had to stop again about 2,5 kilometers from our destination for me to put on my protective pants as well, the rain came down really hard by then.

We eventually got to the campsite at around 1.30pm and we were welcomed by the owner with a free drink or ice cream. I badly needed coffee by that stage so this was very much appreciated! I was very happy to hear that the cabin I had booked was already available so we could go inside and strip off all the wet gear straight away. The cabin was basic but comfortable enough, and it was exactly what I was expecting: 2 bunk beds, a table and four chairs and a three-ring cooker.

We got some games from the canteen which we were allowed to take back to the cabin, and played them for a while.

Inside the cabin
When the rain stopped we went for a short walk to look at the facilities of the campsite, and the toilets and showers looked very clean. To get hot water you get a special key and the water starts once you insert this into the slot. This works for washing dishes, the laundry and the showers. The key is “loaded” with €10,- and you can see it counting down so you know exactly how much you have used. When you leave they check this and you only pay for what you have used.

When things had dried out a bit the girls went to the playground and I sat reading in our cabin for a little while. I then cooked dinner (very simple tonight, basically heated some leftover pasta which I had taken with us from home), and after that the girls played some more until it was time to have a shower. We all had an ice cream for dessert after that and then it was time for the girls to hit the hay and leave me to sit outside in the sun for a little while reading…

I must admit that I found the cycling quite difficult.

The kitchen
Not so much because of the rain or the distance (after all it was only about 22 kilometers), but because of the weight I had to carry on the front of the bike. It took me quite a bit of my strength to keep the bike straight and it would not surprise me to wake up in the morning with very sore arm muscles! It also turned out I had forgotten a few things that would have come in handy, like plates for instance. I took them out for some reason and then forgot to repack them. We made do with some containers I had brought our sandwiches and other stuff in though.
