Thinking of Holland...

Our (dead end) street, near the river

When I tell people where I live in Holland, in Heerewaarden, they obviously don't know where that is.
I try Zaltbommel? (15 km) then Den Bosch? (dèn Bosj, 25 km) Eindhoven? (50 km) Amsterdam? (90 km)
Than they will allways answer: 'Ah, Drugs!'

This is a real misunderstanding, as most Dutch do not buy/sell/use drugs.

We live in a lovely country along slow flowing rivers running to the sea. We have a coastline of most beautiful beaches, sandy dunes, great little islands, lots of open land with a free view of several kilometers/miles, great lakes, stop me or I will go on forever.

In these nice places we can do lots of things when we combine them with our weather, like sailing in boats or blokarts, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Or we can ignore the weather and go biking or fishing.

Because the sea is always a threat, we keep the water out with dikes and dunes, but also with special constructions that are a special treat to go and visit, like the deltaworks in Zeeland, the afsluitdijk that separates the Zuyderzee (now IJsselmeer) from the waddensea, and our polders that lay in the IJsselmeer.

Come for a swim?
Even Schiphol airport, where much of our guests arrive, lies in a large polder reclaimed from the water in 1852.

We have great places to visit like the Keukenhof in springtime, cheese markets in Gouda and Alkmaar, museums in Amsterdam (if, not when, they ever stop refurbishing them), boat trips in the canals of Amsterdam and the the harbours of Rotterdam, skûtsje sailing in Friesland, the open air museum in Arnhem and ofcourse the Efteling (nowadays it looks a bit like Disneyland, but it is much cheaper:) I have been there often with our foreign guests that came over from America, Australia, England and Germany, and we showed them around with a fondness of our country.

Yes, I have clogs (I do not wear them all the time:), and love mills (even know a miller) flat lands and cows.

The Maas (Meuse) is not a big river, like the Rhine, but wide enough for the big ships
But instead of drugs I will take (churned) milk and yoghurt and brown bread with cheese.

Thinking of Holland... please think of other things than 'Ah, Drugs'
