Nice
Yesterday, May 27, was one of the best days of the trip so far. I slept until 11, met up with PJ and Ashley, and headed straight for the beach. For those of you that don’t know, Nice is situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea near the Italian border. There is a massive stretch of beach that is lined with homes, hotels, and shops. The beach itself consists of stone pebbles instead of sand which takes some time for your feet to get used to. The water itself is clear, calm, and deep.

We spent a good four hours lying in the sun, people watching, and swimming. This place is the mecca of people watching. Men can be fat, skinny, speedo (and/or thong) bearing, and of all races you could imagine. As for the women, they are young or very old, topless or covered (even though it seems that the older ones tend to lose their tops more frequently than the rest).

At one point, we noticed someone in the ocean that looked very familiar. After staring intently he finally walked closer to us and he looked exactly like Kanye West. I even took a picture for your enjoyment.

For lunch, I went to the market in vieux Nice and picked up half a watermelon for four Euro, brought it to the beach, and went to town on it. It was delicious to say the least.

Once Ashley started to notice massive sunburn on its way, we headed back to the hostel to rest for a bit with a stop at a grocery store to pick up some food for dinner. For eight Euro, we got a box of pasta, a bag of shrimp, some garlic, and a bit of butter and had shrimp scampi for dinner, prepared by ourselves in the kitchen at the hostel.

As we ate, three girls sat down next to us to eat their own dinner.

And who would’ve ever guessed, one goes to University of Virginia and the other two are at Virginia tech and are traveling through Europe for a month. After chatting about our travels and our homes, we all (Me, PJ, Ashley, and the three Virginians) all headed to Vieux Nice to see if we could find a place to watch the European Champions League Final.

The Final match, a soccer game between FC Barcelona and Manchester United, is the equivalent of the Super Bowl in the US. Every bar and restaurant were advertising the game. Even though we didn’t care about the game, we figured the atmosphere of the area would be worth it. The game started at 8:45pm.

We arrived at 8:30 and we realized we were way too late. Every place was full and they weren’t letting anyone else in. As we kept walking around, Barcelona scored. The entire town went crazy (there were a lot of Barcelona fans around). People were screaming and yelling and hugging each other like they had all just won the lottery. We soon found a small restaurant just outside of Vieux Nice that had the game. We had the entire place to ourselves at first, until more people ran into the same problem we had and joined us. Barcelona ended up winning 2-0. It has been all over the news today not only here, but also back in the US.
