Mt Etna above the estates on the coast of Taormina
I thought for second maybe it's cause Malta sucked so much, but I realized Italy and Sicily just know how to do things right. I took a monster excursion today that went from 5am to midnight (due to the 2 hour ferry ride each way), and got the hell out of Dodge for a little bit and into the heart of one of the prettiest countries in the world - Sicily. (Sorry I still can't figure out if Sicily is it's own country or part of Italy).

Taormina might be a bit of a biased view, being all posh and cinqueterra-like, but man it just hit the spot in so many ways. The bus veered around the hairpin turns reminiscent of Hawaii, but with ancient stone instead of prehistoric trees. I walked around the narrow alleys to the public garden, which had a gorgeous view of a coastline that was reminiscent of Monaco.

It was a bit frightening, I was scared of getting lost as nobody has bothered to provide roadmaps or any sort of navigation tool the entire week I was here. so it was a kind of.. ok down the stairs and right after the stand with all the fish. When you see the ocean turn left, ok how do I do that backwards?? But managed in one piece after all! Then window shopped in the beautiful avenue and even picked up a righteous bathing suit from the "africa" collection - I AM SO HAPPY!!! Joyce eat your heart out!

Then to finish things off, I had lunch at a corner restaurant by myself and had one of Italy's delights - prosciutto and melon, and a pizza al funghi. I can't begin to describe the joy of eating prosciutto and melon! I finished off the whole plate in less than 4 minutes and had this vapid smile on my face the whole time, people must've thought I was on drugs.

I say, if you're going to eat at all - eat in Sicily. Particularly when you've just spent 3 months in Central Africa eating little more than bread with that awful laughing cow cheese for every meal. What a way to reintegrate into normal society, and normal gastronomy - an afternoon at ANY restaurant in Taormino =)

Not surprisingly, when I see something beautiful, I think of my mom. She's the one I get my adventure from, my courage, and my occassional desire to be in the spotlight. Sicily is definitely a place I'd take her for a week, I think she'd really enjoy it =) There are so many little cafes, great shops, and breathtaking views. There are bands playing in the piazzo and gelato stores everywhere. I spoke to Chris in Vienna and apparently there are more ancient ruins in Taormino than in all of Greece! How fascinating, and how absolutely worthy of another trip that discovery is!!
