Off to Switzerland

One of the delights of Belgium is the ability to take short trips around Europe.

Off to Switzerland

One of the fringe benefits of being a scientist is the travel (it is certainly not the hours or the pay!). I had to meet a colleague about some research, so off to Basel! My first taste of Switzerland was hotel rooms and laboratories, but friends were able to show me around the nice buildings and excellent pubs and I had a blast. The city is really quite beautiful, a nice bled of the old and the modern, and it was nice to see the grand old Rhine so close to the source, a pristine bubbling river of glacial melt full of fish, rather than the sluggish utilitarian river we know downstream.

Reasonable accommodation in Basel
Mission 21 is a huge old building run by a centre that typically organises conferences and meetings on aid to Africa. When conferences aren't on, they drop the prices of the rooms to a reasonable rate. The rooms are tiny but excellent, the breakfast is great and they include a travel card for public transport around Basel. The place is overly expensive, but it is Switzerland afterall and the place is less overly expensive than comparable places close to the old town and the university. Just why the place was surrounded by armed guards when I was staying there I don’t know.
