Impressions of the South
May 6, 2009
Although I lived in Atlanta for the better part of my life, I have been reading some travel books on the area to get new ideas about where to go. I’ve also been looking at people’s travel blogs on here. It’s so funny to see other people’s impression of the south. They seem to think we sit in rocking chairs on the front porch of our big white house with columns sipping sweet tea all day. That is, until we have our hearty breakfast which must include grits and at least twelve things that are fried. Don’t get me wrong, I love fried chicken and sweet tea as much as anyone, but really now. And yes, southern hospitality is one of the perks of living in this part of the country. Having lived in the north and midwest, I can say there is a huge difference. But that seems like all people emphasize about this area of the country. It reminds me of moving to New York, where people actually asked me if we wore shoes in Georgia and if I’d seen the KKK (asked in dead seriousness). Seriously? This is 2009. Maybe more people need to travel to urban areas in the south and expand their thinking a bit.
