Biloxi Beach
May 11, 2009
Well, the Biloxi beach isn't much to write home about. We went around noon and it was littered with trash. I don't know if they didn't clean it the night before or what. Outside of that, the day was nice. We drove around and looked at what remains of the hurricane damage. It's wild to see still stairs that don't lead anywhere or the foundation of building with not much else around. There's plenty of empty space on the beachfront if we have any investors out there.

Gumbo for Presidents
Mary Mahoney’s Old French House was supposed to be something special, having served numerous presidents’ their famous gumbo. Well, I can’t speak for the gumbo, but their other dishes are very average. After winding around a courtyard until I finally found the entrance, I was wishing the dining room looked more like the old, brick courtyard. As I entered the restaurant, the first thing that caught me off guard was the man who said “how you doing” in a deep Yankee accent. I guess I was expecting a southern drawl, or maybe a Cajun accent. As we were seated, I noticed the exposed brick walls and country paintings were downplayed by the cheap dining table sets and tables clothes. What a shame because the frame of the room was very pretty.
Our meal came in three courses. First, I tried a salad with tasty, homemade blue cheese dressing. Then, the baked stuffed shrimp came with several shrimp peelings still inside. Even if I overlooked that, there was too much stuffing and not enough shrimp. My husband’s fried catfish was fine, but nothing I would go back for. For dessert, we tried their “famous” bread pudding with rum sauce. It received one thumb up and one thumb down. It has a very strong essence of rum. Our other dessert was rainbow sherbet, which was store bought and tasted fine.

Blah Casino Buffet
The Satisfaction Buffet, located inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, was overpriced and not very good. Although it was a small step up from the buffet I tried at the Isle of Capri Hotel and Casino, it still wasn’t worth the money. The server was attentive, but that could not compensate for the bland food. Although many items were offered, such as crab legs, steak, shrimp, and fondue, nothing quite hit the mark of a solid dish.
