Every year on the 30th of April we celebrate Queens Day. This was the birthday of a former queen, but kept it all the time. It's a national public holiday. Every one is dressed in orange and you can sell all your stuff on the streets...

Total madness in Amsterdam: Queens Day 2009

My train, too early...

Queens Day starts with Queens Night (29th of April). Bars are open and in a lot of cities are performances of famous people. I went to my home town Amersfoort to celebrate this national event with a friend. I came home 5am and had to leave home 8.30am to go to Amsterdam to hang out with some great TB people!
On Queens Day every one is dressed in orange (crazy costumes). The more orange the better. So spay paint your hair, get some orange clothes and you'll be fine! Happy birthday to the Queen! :-)

It was my first time Queens Day in Amsterdam. I arrived around 9.30am at Amsterdam Central Station and met Lieke there. We waited for a group coming from Leiden and headed off to the Jordaan to meet Manuel and some others in cafe the Daalder.
Some how, we got a little lost and arrived 'late' at this place. Not every one was there, so it wasn't a problem. We were all a little quiet, tired from a short night, but not for long anymore.

After some coffee, tea and coke we walked through the Jordaan where people were selling things on the streets. If you have stuff in your home and you want to get rid of it. This is the day! Claim a part of the side walk or street and put down a sheet and drop your stuff on it. Sit there all day and people might buy from you... There is so much junk, but a lot of things get sold.
We had two groupleaders in the Jordaan to make sure we held the group together. We had Bas with his orange-blow-up-bat and Rob (?) with the pink/orange My little pony... You can see it on the pics.

In the mean time we met some new people and lost some others. Keiko was the first one, and it wasn't the last time either :p From the Jordaan we walked to Leidse Plein and Vondel Park. Here we relaxed on the fields, ate some hotdogs and looked around at all the people. Some of us got bored and we decided to go to Museum Plein where there was a big stage of a popular radio station: 538.

Check the outfits...
Some famous singers were performing. It was crazy, so many people! More than 200.000 people were dancing, yelling, acting crazy, drinking and enjoying the music. No wonder we lost Keiko again on our way to Museum Plein... But we found her back again and never let her out of sight anymore :-) :p "We have Keiko"... Gerard Joling, Milo, Party Squad, IOS and some other bands gave away a show.

Annoeska had an Oranje Leeuw Broek (Orange Lion Pants) with her. Many of us wore it and we wrote all our names on it. Ket made his nickname come true. Kitty Ket in lion-pants. Go Ket! ;-) :p Also Thomas wore it, but he gave it all a different look... Hahaha!

Leaving Museam Plein after a while, because it was so crowded, we met Thomas and walked to Max Eeuwe Plein to see Nic working for Comedy Central Cafe. We got some free beers! Thanks Nic!!! Since the weather was absolute perfect, we took a break to hang on the shore of one of the many canals of Amsterdam.

Many party boats with DJ came by. What a great day!
Another TB member met us here, Martijn. At some point we decided to go for dinner in the streets around Leidse Plein. But in these streets were also DJ's with some really good crazy dance music. I guess we've been there partying for at least one more hour. Totally crazy... But so much fun. Hungry and thirsty we went looking for a place to eat. But that's not so easy when you're with a group. But at a pizza place some tables just got empty and TB crashed the place :-) The pizzas were brought pretty fast and we got a little quiet.
After dinner it was time to go back to Amsterdam Central Station for the most of us. We had a fun and 'cozy' walk all together... Ending up with sore shoulder muscles... But it was worth it! We're one big TB family, right?! :p ;-) :-)
At 11.30pm I got home. It was a great day!

Manuel, thanks for organizing this extremely fun meet up! And every one who was there: thanks for this great day and all the fun! Hope to meet you all soon!

Queens Day in The Netherlands
Since 1949 is 30th of April a national holiday in the Netherlands. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the queen. It was the actual birth date of queen Wilhelmina. The present queen, Beatrix, is not born on this date. Still we kept this date.

Queens Day starts with Queens Night (29th of April). In many cities are events and performances of famous people and bars are open all night, doesn't matter which day of the week it is.
Then next day it's Queens Day. The biggest happening is always in Amsterdam and the city the royal family visits.
Every where in the Netherlands are free markets: people sell things they don't need any more. They can make some nice cash money out of it.
In the big cities is it party all over. Music and DJ's on the squares, people dancing, drinking and eating on the streets. No public transport in the city centre most of the time.

Every one is dressed in orange and some people spay paint their hair orange. Orange is the "national" color of the Netherlands.

When you're around, come and join us crazy Dutch in the party :-)
