Hola Familia, Amigos y Estudiantes....
I have arrived safely in Cusco, Peru accompanied on all of my plane rides by Doug McConnell (Bay Area Backroads on KRON). His personality is much like he appears on his shows...very friendly, kind, well-traveled, and just an all around nice guy. I´m glad I was blessed with such great company along my journey from SF to Peru. I am very exhausted from the altitude here, but excited for my volunteering and trekking adventures. I am staying at the house of a sweet older couple (married for 50 years) with four other girls who are also here volunteering. We are well taken care of by Virginia and Osmar....nice, warm cozy beds and 3 meals a day. It is about a 25 minute walk to downtown Cusco, which is where our volunteer office is located. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cusco
I have my volunteer training today and then for the next two days we will be celebrating Inti Raymi, or winter solstice. There are already tons of parades, dancing, music and parties in the streets here. Inti Raymi is the second largest festival in South America (besides Carnival)http://www.unique-southamerica-travel-experience.com/inti-raymi.html It is also the reason I showed up one week before my volunteering actually starts. :)
I am also excited to be going to Puno and Lake Titicaca later this week with a friend from home, Devin. We will be exploring and staying on some of the smaller islands out on the Lake, which borders Bolivia. Once I return on Sunday, my volunteering (with orphans/street children)will begin next Monday and run for three weeks. Before departing on August 2nd, I look forward to exploring Machu Picchu, the Amazon jungle, and Lima.
Until the next entry in my blog.....
P.S. !Feliz Dia de Los Padres! Dad y Bob
