Popup and ATV's

Mike and I loaded up the popup on Friday and gased up the ATV's so all we had to do on Saturday morning was drive up to Croom. It's about an 45 minute drive from Tampa on I-75. Located off exit 301 or Highways 98 and 50.  The cost is $50 a year for the ATV's and they give you a sticker to place on your bike. The campground is $15 a night.  The weekend is very busy, so get here early to get a spot. The campground is layed out in a loop with the camp sites on the outside and the community showers and bathrooms in the center. Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, and water and electric hookups.

Our first day we hooked up the popup to the water and electric, made up the beds, and got everything situated and ready to go.

We hopped on our ATV's and off we went into the woods. The reason they call it the Buttenbach Mine Campground was back in the sixties this used to be a phosphate mine. For some reason it was not finished or completely excavated. The Croom area covers 2,600 acres, with easy to challenging terrain. Some of the hills have names like "whiteface" or "suicide".  Suicide got it name because you climb the hill and have to stop at the top and go left or right to get back down. If you went straight you went over the cliff. You tend to remember little things like that. The terrain has hardwood hammocks, scrubs, and pines. Back in the early seventies I got my first dirt bike, it was a Honda XR-75. I loved that bike. My Dad had a Honda 125 Trials bike and my Mom had a Honda 100. As you can tell we are a Honda family.

My family and some friends of ours would come up here for the weekend. Then there was no fees for your bikes. After riding here so long you learn where all the pits are and what trails lead where. It's a great place to go riding, the only one I know of besides driving all the way to Ocala.

Mom and Dad drove up just inn time for some hot dogs and hamburgers, and potato salad. It was really nice outside and no bugs to bother you. They stayed for a few hours and had to go. Mom had to make a stop at Walmart.

It's Sunday late afternoon and Mike and I went out riding one more time before it gets to dark. We headed over to the deep pit. Lots of good hills to climb. This time I took my camera and got some great shots of us climbing the hills.

It was about a hour ride in the woods and we wanted to get back and take a shower before it gets to late.  Tomorrow will be our last day here and most likely leave around 12:00 or 1:00.

Here's a quick story for ya.......I had to get up during the night to use the restroom.  Along the way I ran in to three armadillo's sniffing thru the leaves on the ground. All of a sudden I here a high pitch scretch kinda of whine up in the trees. I used my flashlight trying to see what it could be but I could never catch a glimpse of it. After I came out of the restroom I could here what ever it was using it's claws to climb down the tree. I still could not see what it was. My only guess it was a opossum. What sounds you can hear at night...boo!!
