We have a blast in Spain... we were a whole month over there; we stayed with friends all the time --yep, we didn't spend a dime in hotels ; ) in Madrid we met a Hungarian friend of our Spanish friend (who hosted while we were in Barcelona for a week), she let us stay at her apartment, and was very nice, but we barely see her since she had to work all weekdays. With them and other friends we visited Segovia (north of Madrid, 30 mins. away in train) with a beautiful ancient Roman aqueduct. In Madrid we worked some days out of the apartment and from a McDonald's in Gran Via (downtown) -- McD's over there are very different and more upscale than what we have stateside. Second week we took off to Canary Islands, there one of my Cuban best friends invited us for over a week. In Gran Canaria (the island we were) we went to beaches, mountains, cities, small towns... and the little town where two of my grand-grandfathers came from!! We did a little research and found very old documents at the local church... those documents will be useful for my family in Cuba to obtain help from a Spanish government program that supports descendants from Spaniards with citizenship status and pension funds. After Canary Islands, back to Madrid, then after losing our flight to Barcelona we rented a car and headed to the historic city of Toledo -- a walled town built by the Romans, first then the Moors (arabs) -- later we stopped to see some famous windmills, the same that inspired the passages of Don Quixote!! Late in the night we witnessed the fireworks, fires and party of the famed Fallas in Valencia... before continuing to our destination the following morning: Barcelona. (BTW, that night we slept in the car at a rest area...haha) The first days in Barcelona were to rest and do some work for our current clients, but went out to walk and eat some times, then Thursday 19th. we borrowed our friend's car and took the highway all the way into France to check the famed Viaduc de Millau (the tallest bridge in the world they say), aftyer 4 hours driving we finally saw the pretty bridge! --but it took only a minute to pass it!!! hahaha.... Ok, from afar the Viaduc looks very nice! In the village of Millau we had dinner with some huge beers! Then 4 more hours back.... Next day we took off to Mallorca, there lives the daughter of a good friend of mine -- a Cuban scientist who got me into studying Japanese-- I knew his daughter since she was a little girl... now she's married and she's a scientist too! In Palma de Mallorca we had a great time, visiting many places in just two days! Sunday we returned to Barcelona, on Monday we went to some famous landmarks in the city, and in the evening we took the high-speed train to Madrid. Tuesday we enjoyed our last day in Spain. Wednesday we were flying back to Houston.... : (
