West coast --> Sa Calobra / Torrente de Pareis

Mallorca is best known for being a 'party island'. Fewer people know that it is also a very beautiful place! My wife and I visited Mallorca back in 2004. It was a short visit serving as an 'appetizer' for us.

West Coast, Mallorca
We got our rental car early in the morning and headed for the west coast of the island. It takes some time if you - like us - choose to take the coastal road. The distances are not very long but the course of the road reduces the average speed substantially!
The landscape is great. Impressive bays, deep blue water and small picturesque villages. No signs of mass tourism yet. Our first destination on this day was a village called "Sa Calobra". It is well known for the nearby canyon "Torrent de Pareis". There are two ways to access the village and the canyon: by boat (until 1932 this was the only way) or by a steep scenic road that is riddled with hairpin curves. Great drive! The canyon itself is most impressive. We walked some hundred metres into it. At some points the walls are about 400 metres high.
