Monastir de Lluc

Mallorca is best known for being a 'party island'. Fewer people know that it is also a very beautiful place! My wife and I visited Mallorca back in 2004. It was a short visit serving as an 'appetizer' for us.

Monastir de Lluc

It took some time to reach the famous Monastir de Lluc. The monastery is located in a wide valley of the Serra Tramuntana. It is the most important convent of the island. Legend relates that a shepherd called Lluc found a mystical black Modonna ("La Moreneta") here back in 1230. Construction of the monastery began in 1250. For this reason Monastir de Lluc is still a  place of steady pilgrimage - and tourism. It is stated that every Majorcan has visited the madonna at least once in his life.
Well, shame on us. We neither had a look at the madonna nor at the museum. We just climbed up the the mountain in the back of the convent and enjoyed the view. Then walked down again and strolled through the courts.
