After a week of city life and a good week of Spanish school we left to see some more of Guatemala.   We took a tourist van from Antigua to Panajachel down a road that 9 years ago when I visited Guatemala was considered too much of a security risk.   Well we made it, so maybe things have improved.   Panajechel or Pana is on a beautiful lake, Lake Atilan, surrounded by dorment volcanos and Mayan villages some of which have no roads going to them.   It is a resort town, having good restaurants and lots of people trying to sell you things.   We took a tour around the lake Saturday morning to see the villages with a guide.  One village was definitly on the new age tour with its meditation and yoga center.   We learned alot about the impact of the Guatemalen civil war on the area (brought to you by the USA and Soviet Union) and got to visit with the most powerful Mayan saint, Maximon, in another village with out a meditation and yoga center.

Maximon was doing his usual thing of smoking cigs and drinking rum while his house mates were playing cards in the background.   I asked him to end the war in Iraq and paid him 20 quezales (about 3 dollars) for a photo and a wish.   Lets all hope he does his thing.   If this doesn´t work I may have to go back to the wailing wall in Israel and talk to another set of gods.

After our tour of Lake Atitlan we took off in the afternoon down another winding road to see the biggest Mayan market of them all in Chichicastenango.   It will be intense for sure!

Stay tuned for more info.
