Arriving at Anjuna Beach

As I mentioned when I came to Goa it was just after Diwali, so the boys were off school for 2 weeks.  So unlike most volunteers who spend their time teaching English or some other subject,  I got to hang out, play cricket, football, chess, carrom, and watch bollywood movies!   If anyone knows the Asian schooling system, its pretty rigorous, lots of time spent studying, so a little fun all the boys were looking for, and "Uncle", as they all called me, is full of fun! :)

Apart from playing sports, I took them to the beach and old Goa.

For some of the boys this was their first time to any beach, so it was definitely a treat. That day at the beach was a ton of fun. They all played for hours in the water and the day was topped off by a big buffet lunch.  The weekend before, while I was at the same beach, I talked to the owner of a beachfront restaurant, told him I was bringing these boys to the beach and wanted to give them a big treat.  So we worked out a deal and he said he would do something special for them.

Now to put this lunch buffet in perspective, EVERY day for lunch and dinner the boys eat a full place of rice and a little bit of curry (myself included). That's it. While I was there, Seva Trust got a big donation of fish, so EVERY day was either fish curry or fried fish!

Funny when I called the owner that morning to confirm we were coming to the beach, I asked what he was making.

The Feast!
He said he was going to do a lot of sea food! So I told him about all the fish and rice they already ate. The owner told me no problem, he‘ll do something different.  So when we sat down for lunch there was lots of great food and only one fish dish. The ONE dish absolutely none of the boys touched lol!  They all enjoyed the meal so much, they all fell asleep from eating too much :)

Of course my time there it was not ALL fun and games, almost everyday (and everyday during my 3rd week when they went back to school)  their was some time spent studying. All the boys are varying ages and grades, so most time was spent helping them read English passages and solve math problems.  Apart from their own homework, I spent a lot of time teaching them world geography and a little about science and general knowledge.

Its amazing how much these kids devour information. One day I went out to buy the boys some books about science, technology, some atlases, the human body, etc.  When I got home from the market that day, you would think I brought these guys each a Sony Playstation! They just grabbed all the books and started reading and asking question after question. Amazing, such a thirst for knowledge.
