Salt Flat Tour

There are so many options for doing a tour of the Salar de Uyuni. We chose to go from Tupiza as this is the nearest town to the border with Argentina.

There are a number of companies that run from Tupiza, all on a pretty similar schedule. We decided to go with a company called El Grano de Oro. They run a four day three night programme that takes you all around the national parks west of Tupiza, up to some hot springs and geisers and finally on the last day to the salt flats.

As the tour is over four days it does mean you spend a lot of time in the car but other passengers are kept to a minimal. You usually travel in groups of 4 or 5 in 4x4 vehicles. They provide you with accomodation which is really basic but so are all the other companies. A word of caution though that its absolutely freezing during the night so definitely invest in hiring a sleeping bag if your without.

We each paid 1200 Bolivianos to go in a group of 4 but I believe its less if you have 5 people in the car. This is inclusive of everything on the trip.

We stayed in a hotel called Mitru while waiting for the tour in Tupiza. Just a note that there are no hostels in the town. Mitru was fairly comfortable and had very hot showers which is priority in Bolivia! The breakfast was included there and was fairly decent as well.

Mitru also have a tour agency in the building so you can use them to go on a Salar de Uyuni tour as well.
