Tilcara is a stunning village in the area of Quebrada de Humahuaca. The reason you visit this area is solely for the landscape. We didn´t go and stay in Purmamarca, as we heard it was far to touristy and we did get a quick look when we passed on the bus.
The hostel we stayed in here was beautiful, Malka Hostel. It was one of the more expensive places I´ve stayed in at $50 AR a night but its a very cool place. There are two dorm rooms (so make sure you make reservations!) which are self contained with own bathroom and kitchen. Each room has an outside area too for hanging out complete with BBQ.
There are two real hikes to do in town. One to the Incan fortress and the a waterfall, both worth doing.
We went to a local Peña on the Sunday night we were in town. Its right on the main square on the corner (can´t remember the name unfortunitely). It got packed very early that night, but not on the Monday surprising. We tried llama meat for the first time in our life which was surprising very tasty! The music there was fantastic, everyone really got into it. Worth going to if your in town for a night.
