come out come out wherever you areeee

Didnt get  such a great sleep last night had to go to toilet soo bad at 2:20am but I tried to ignore it, they were so far away and there were no lights and I had to take my own toilet paper and torch so much effort!! I waited til 4am til I couldn’t wait anymore so nature won and I was forced to go to the toilet haha. Had a day off food prep today and ‘de-ticked tortoises’. We spent most of the morning actually looking for them, it was sooo annoying. They could have been anywhere!! We had to look in the cheetah’s enclosure, which was really unsuccessful, and then around the lapa, which wasn’t too hard because the grass is nice, short and green there, everywhere else that we had to look for them the grass was tall and they were in the bushes and it was bonus if we found one.

The Lapa and area around it
We were taught the correct way to pick them up, which was by the hook in their shell at the opposite end to their head. Picking them up at their sides could prove harmful as their claws are GINORMAGANTIC and could easily scratch your arms off.  Well, maybe not that traumatic, but still. Anyway we started counting them at 11:15 AND an hour and a half later, we were finished. We had to turn them over one by one, remove any ticks on their skin that we found, douse them in a tick prevention lotion and then paint a new number on their shell. Turns out I learnt a bit today about tortoises and how to tell apart the males from the females. Just in case you wanna know some trivial information, female tortoises are recognisable by a large dip in their shell underneath and a ‘v’ shape cut at the head of their shell. Males have a flat shell and the head cut underneath is much more shallow and circular. There!! Take that!  You’ve learnt something by reading this far into my blog, haha.
Are you stalking?!

My sunburn is pretty bad its already started blistering in certain parts, and it stings a little, I’ve been putting sunscreen on though so meh the sun just hates me, that’s all. But anyway, de-ticking tortoises is the most boring job ever!! TRUST ME!

Group 3 was on cleaning today do we had to wash up everyone’s dishes from lunch. Tuna pasta... had to be the tuna day... lol Hate seafood with a capital ‘H’!!  A lot of people were ‘sick’  today, and one girl has bites all up her arm and on one side of her face apparently from mosquito’s she said.

It looks so bad though, and painful!! It really showed up on her today and appeared to be getting worse because yesterday evening she had them up her arm, but her face was fine.

I got ambushed by 2 of the 7 month old lions today. I lost my group for a while so went to get my water bottle, and the short cut to the volunteer room from the lapa is through the lion enclosure. 2 of them tried stalking me so I watched them and 1 stopped but the other continued and jumped on my back straight to my bra with his paws on either side of my ribcage. I wrestled with him for a little while and he managed to flip himself over in front of me, then no sooner had he done that the other one pounced on my back and took me from behind brastrap again. Mikkel one of the long term volunteer’s who’s main job is to help co-ordinate the activities, was on the outside of the enclosure watching and smiling.

He asked if I needed a hand, haha, I must have looked so in over my head, but I still love them.

Ok so ask me again WHY I chose to go bareback horse riding again this afternoon? Yesterday I was fine today I was fine, then this arvo my thighs began to hurt then sitting on the horse was a nightmare from the start! And it lasted 2 whole hours. We patrolled the perimeter of the farm and some of the lifeline. Through the bush and tracks and sometimes where there weren’t any paths. I found out that Cadbury enjoyed just missing thorn trees which meant that whoever was on his back..me, of course, brushed against them. Brushed isn’t exactly the right word. Getting stuck into them is probably more appropriate. I hate to admit it, but I was complaining the whole time! I felt so annoying but Oh My Gawd! It was painful! Corey the horse dude, didn’t get us back until 6 which gave us an hour to walk back, have a shower, get changed and ready then walk back to the lapa again for our themed lapa night.

The decorated Table

The night was amazing everyone looked great. Nicola taught us how to play drums and I played with her on the same drum. It sounded really good. The area was set up and decorated gorgeously! Everything looked really nice and was based around a large bon fire. Dinner took forever to come out. We were expecting dinner around the normal 7pm, at least 2 hours later... dinner was ready. It was really nice but I was so tired and left straight after we’d eaten. I didn’t care about dessert i just wanted my bed. It would have been nearly 10 by the time we got back to  the village, and I’d been going to bed 8:30 at the latest!
