I must admit this is the furthest east i have been in Europe and i didnt really know what to expect, i had seen some photos of Sofia and it looked beautiful :) however as how the people are there, and whether it was safe for a girl to be travelling just with her boyfriend is another matter. (some places i have been, i have had hassle as having blonde hair.) In Bulgaria though there are none of these problems, i must say women dress very similar to the U.K and in the evening they all get dressed up too so no worries about taking your skirts/dresses :)
When you arrive into Sofia airport, when looking for a taxi be wise.
Sofia, i thought personally was quite small for a city, you can walk around the city, no need for buses or taxis, we did get a taxi back to our hotel though as we stayed a way out of the city.
We went on a Monday and there were many markets going on it the city, so i assume that they run all the time :) overall you don't need long to look round the city, we did it all in a day.
I would recommend that you go to Sofia, however perhaps go for a day in the city then go either skiing or to the beach?
