A Change of Direction
April 7, 2009
In a departure from my usual southern sojourns, I decided to make a trip up north. I had been promising to visit my friends in Seattle for awhile. While April isn't the ideal time to head up that way, it worked because I had a week off for spring break. I would have enough time to make a little trip up to Vancouver. Airfare was cheap and I knew I had places to stay in Seattle.
I followed the weather report for a week before my trip. Basically Seattle had been experiencing abnormally warm and clear weather. Then, on the day I planned to arrive, the typical cold and April showers would resume. Awesome. I decided it would be one last hurrah for my thick winter sweaters. I somehow fit the bulky items into my carry on-sized suitcase. I am amazed at what last year's month of backpacking did to curb my overpacking habit.
I woke up to the sound of rain after days of nice weather in San Francisco. The first thing that came to my mind was that the weather couldn't be much worse in Seattle so it would be awesome if it was better. I got to the airport just in time, only to find out my flight was delayed because of the weather. As usual, the most innocent looking grandma-type was getting the big search at the security line. The flight was smooth and only about an hour and a half. As we landed, I got a nice view of some islands and the sun setting behind snow-capped mountains in the distance.
One of my college friends picked me up from the airport. She before heading back to her place, she took me by Kerry Park where there are great views of Seattle. On a good day, you can see Mt. Rainier in the background. It happened to be good day, but unfortunately I didn't have my camera out. I stayed with her the first night and we ordered dinner and did some catching up. We went to bed early because she had to go to work in the morning and I had to rest up for day of walking around the city and visiting some of Seattle's postcard sites.
