Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

After a nice lunch, we headed about 10 minutes west of Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon Nat'l. Conservation Area. A beautiful scenic loop road lead us past wonderful red rocks littered with people climbing! We loved the desert, each stop on the road overlooked something different. The first stop was at the Red Rocks, another stop brought us to petroglyphs of hand prints centuries old in the stones. I have read that hand prints side-by-side were often where women had stood when giving birth. I cannot imagine the number of women, standing in the same spot, grasping the same stone face, as their baby was born.
Another stop was a higher elevation in the park that afforded a panoramic view of the red rocks, desert and Las Vegas in the distance.
On the plane to Las Vegas, FINALLY!
We finally reached a trail head that, we had been told, was a level trail and worth the short walk into a creek and canyon. Barry was willing and we set out, two tourists, no water, up the 1 mile rocky path. I loved every step, and saw wildflowers in bloom, birds, evidence of wild burros and bighorn sheep, lizards, cactus! Barry, grumbled along, stopping occasionally to find a cell phone signal & check his email! After we traveled along for 1 mile, we came to another trail head with a sign that to reach the creek and canyon we had to go for another mile! Oh well, thirsty and tired (remember we got up this morning at 3:30 to catch our plane) we turned back to travel happily down to the car!
We stopped just west of the park at the little tourist spot, Bonnie Springs, for some water! I would have liked to stay a bit longer, but we were both anxious to check into the hotel, get some dinner, and some rest!

I totally forgot that you cannot take any liquids over 4ounces in your carry on luggage! Rather than lose my brand new bottle of Crabtree & Evelyn Body Wash ($16), I opted to check my old duffel bag. I totally forgot that American Airlines charges you $15 to check a bag. The cost of the body wash now? $31  (Note: remember this for later!)

Finally on the ground, we are off to the Rental Car Center, a long shuttle bus ride away from the airport to get our car. We had agreed ahead of time to drive out to the desert canyons today and return the car first thing the next morning.....
This post must start the night before our trip, when American Airlines called at 6pm to inform us that our 7am direct flight to Las Vegas had been canceled. They had graciously arranged to rebook us on an 8am flight through Dallas/Ft. Worth arriving in Las Vegas at 2pm! After scrambling a bit, we got on an earlier flight (6am) from St. Louis to O'Hare, with a shorter layover and into Las Vegas at 11am........
This is going to be a short night!
